Jane Eyre is a novel by English writer Charlotte Brontë. Jane Eyre tells her story in first-person point of view as she looks back on her life after her marriage to Edward Rochester. Her independence and ability to make decisions for herself deeply impresses me. Jane refuses to become Mr. Rochester's paramour because of her impassioned self-respect and moral conviction. In the book, I mention these sentences: “conventionality is not morality" and "self-righteousness is not religion", I suppose theyclergyman’re also Jane’s belief.
Although she is educated, well-mannered, and relatively diplomatic, she is still a governess, a paid servant of low social standing, and therefore powerless. But she never gives in and her spirit inspires lots of readers including me.
The novel goes through five stages:
1stJane's childhood at Gateshead: Jane Eyre is a young orphan being raised by Mrs. Reed, her cruel, wealthy aunt. A servant named Bessie provides Jane with some of the few kindnesses she receives. At last Mrs. Reed sends Jane away to school.
2nd Her education at Lowood School: Jane acquires friends and role models but also suffers privations and oppression there. She spends eight years at Lowood, six as a student and two as a teacher. After teaching for two years, Jane accepts a governess position at a manor called Thornfield
3rd Her time as the governess of Thornfield Hall: When teaching at Thornfield, Jane falls in love with her employer, a dark, impassioned man named Rochester. They don’t get married eventually because Rochester has got a wife. Knowing that it is impossible for her to be with Rochester, Jane flees Thornfield.
4th Her time with the Rivers family during which her earnest but cold clergyman-cousin St John Rivers proposes to her: St. John Rivers, Diana and Mary's brother save penniless and hungry Jane. John, a clergyman, asks Jane to marry him and go to India with him. Not out of love, but out of duty, Jane rejects the marriage proposal and her resolve begins to weaken when she mysteriously hears Mr. Rochester's voice calling her name.
5th The finale with her reunion with and marriage to her beloved Rochester: Jane immediately hurries back to Thornfield and finds that it has been burned to the ground. Rochester saved the servants but lost his eyesight and one of his hands. Their relationship is rebuilt and they soon marry. In the end, they enjoy their perfect life together and after two years of blindness, Rochester regain sight in one eye and is able to behold their first son at his birth.
