Y
anshan University was for-merly known as Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute, and was one of the key uni-versities in China at that time. As of 1985, the institute moved to Qinhuan-gdao Island, and as it was located at the foot of Yanshan, it was called as Yanshan University. The School of Economics and Management was established in 1979 and the Management Engineering Department was established in 1984, which was renamed as the School of Economics and Management in 1998. This year is the 20th anniversary for the establishment of the School.
“It is my honor to witness in my entire youthful years the changes of the Economics and Management School during the past 20 years. I finished my bachelor and master degrees at Yanshan University and became a teacher here after graduating. Afterwards, I got my doctoral degree at Renmin University of China and then decided to return to Yan-shan University. From student to teacher, and then to a member of the management team, I have grown up together with the university in the past years. Seei
ng each and every change happening here, I feel proud and gratified. With continuous ef-forts from the faculty in the past 20 years, the School of Economics and Manage-ment has continued expanding and mak-ing breakthroughs with steady progress. Over the years, the school has formed its unique characteristics and turned into a well-known and high-level school among the domestic counterparts. All of these achievements are attributed to the highly responsible and dedicated faculty with high academic level and rich teaching experiences,” said Li Chunling with many emotions, Dean of the Economics and Management School when speaking of the changes happening in the School during the past 20 years in the interview by China’s Foreign T rade .

“Regarding cultivation of un-
dergraduates, we hold the principle to
timely adapting the cultivation program
to the changing talent demands from
society. At present, courses of all majors
include common courses and special-
cooperativeized courses. Common courses focus on
moral and human cultivation and spe-
cialized courses are divided into several
modules, which enable students to have
more choices in courses,” said Li Chun-
ling. The school plans to stop student
enrollment for the undergraduate pro-
grams of Economics and International
Economy and Trade in the next year;
instead it will newly set up the major of
Economics and Finance. This reform
aims to achieving reasonable and fu-
ture-oriented major setting.
According to the introduction of
Li Chunling, over the past years, the
school has greatly increased its input in
discipline construction with remarkable
achievements and breakthroughs, lay-
ing a solid foundation for the school to
pursue further development and higher
quality. In the year of 2006, the school
was authorized to have a first-level
discipline of Management Science and
Engineering for a doctoral degree, the
first approved doctoral discipline in the
liberal arts field of Yanshan University
and a post-doctoral research station was
approved to establish in 2009. In 2012,

agement is the first school of Yanshan University to enroll overseas students and so far it has cultivated more than 200 overseas students. The school start-ed to enroll overseas students for master degrees since September of 2011, and for doctoral degree since September of 2014. “Curren
tly, we have about 50 over-seas students, including courses taught in Chinese and English. Most of these overseas students come from nations along the Belt and Road Initiative and the 9 doctor candidates are all from Pa-kistan,” Li Chunling pointed out. Apart from the National Scholarship, overseas students for a master or doctoral degree may also apply for the Yanshan Univer-sity scholarship. T o help these overseas students better adapt to China’s learning and living style, the school sets up a spe-cialized teacher group to take charge of their teaching and thesis writing guid-ance, which aims to making the overseas students have a sense of belonging and a better adaptation to the learning and living at Yanshan University.
“With the future enrollment of overseas students, we hope to create unique features and continue to expand scale and keep deepening. Academic breakthroughs are expected in the doc-toral program; and we hope to make some international attempts in bachelor and master programs. The Tourism major of our school is a national special major and currently we’re planning to collaborate with relevant majors of
Altai State University of Russia,” Li Chunling added.
Except for the enrollment of overseas students, the school is proac-tively running collaboration progr
ams with excellent overseas colleges. In November of 2014, the undergraduate cooperative education program for the Industrial Engineering major with Curtin University of Technology in Australia was approved; and in 2015 the first generation of undergraduates were enrolled. This undergraduate pro-gram has a school year of “3+1”, namely 3 years studying in China and 1 year in Australia and after graduation diplomas and degree certificates of both sides are granted. “Students have already gone to Australia in September and the lat-est feedback shows that these students adapt well to local circumstances,” said Li Chunling. The cultivation program for these students is specially designed after adequate communication with the Australian side and the courses are rec-ognized by both sides. “The majority of the courses are taught by foreign teach-ers on the Australian side with teach-ing materials in English. This enables
students to have excellent language practices and to better catch up with Australian learning courses once study-ing in Australia. As this major requires English competency, during enrollment we accordingly set high standards of the candidate’s English performance in the college entrance examination.”
Besides, we also collaborate with Monash University of Australia for a “2+2” year program. As one of the world’s top 100 universities, Monash University also belongs to Australia’s “Group of Eight” and it
s business disciplines enjoy a high reputation in the world. Li Chunling regards that “this collaborative program offers more choices to our students for international exchanges”.
However, Li Chunling spoke frankly that many new problems emerge in the course of running collaborative programs and the cultivation cost is quite high. As a consequence, enroll-ment for the Chinese-overseas collab-orative program will be controlled at about 100 students with no big increase to ensure student quality and teaching standard. In the meantime, the School has also intensified inputs in cultivation

of the faculty. “Each year we send two teachers to Australia as visiting scholar or post-doctor for around half a year to one year. Besides, professors of the over-seas counterpart are invited to Yanshan University for concentrated teaching and tutors are assigned to support the rele-vant guidance work.”
In addition, Yanshan Univer-sity has also strengthened mutual recognition of relevant courses. For in
stance, the ACCA certif icate is introduced for the Accounting major and Charted Financial Analyst (CFA) certificate is introduced for Finance Master. These two certificates are in-ternationally recognized and students may better connect with the interna-tional market in the future through mutual recognition of courses via cer-tificate examination.
Strengthen guidance on graduates’ employment
By virtue of cooperation with com-panies, public institutions and govern-mental departments over the past years, the School has established 53 practice bases within and outside the college, laying a solid foundation for students’ internship and employment. The practice bases include one provincial-level college student off-campus practice & education base — “Yanshan University - Zhongqin Xinglong Economics & Management Practice & Education Base” and one China Logistics Society production, ed-ucation and research base — “Yanshan University-Shanxi Wanchang logistics park practice base”.
In the meantime, many companies which receive fresh graduates reflect that the students are hardworking, yet lack innovative capabilities. Li Chunling said, “for this situation, the university has ac-cordingly designed cultivation programs and set up a public optional course in innovation and star
t-up management. Actually this course is mandatory for each student and the School of Eco-nomics and Management takes charge of this course.” Besides, the School has also organized competitions to enhance capabilities. “Each year the University or-ganizes students to participate in relevant competitions of innovation and start-up, equips special teachers to give guidance on the programs and finally selects some
With regard to graduates’ employment, the school has done detailed work by guiding students to establish correct employment view and designing career calendar to help students set up career planning.

With regard to graduates’ employ-ment, the school has done detailed work by guiding students to establish correct employment view and designing career calendar to help students set up career planning. The school conduct analysis of graduates’ employment quality and provide targeted coachi
ng to avoid the wait-and-see phenomenon with “delayed employ-ment”. The school has built a multi-chan-nel information platform to timely provide graduates with employment policies, job fair information and position information; the school utilizes MBA students’ social resources channel to feedback employment demands, which achieves effective infor-mation sharing. In addition, Li Chunling mentioned, “the school attaches great importance to the feedback from the com-panies receiving graduates. Every year the school organizes to visit the cooperative companies to on one hand learn about the situation of the employed graduates and the companies’ satisfaction and on the oth-er hand to observe the weak sections for improvement.”
quality programs for the competition. Regarding achievement transformations, our university boasts great advantages as Yanshan University High-tech Park has many companies and they will incubate the potential programs, which helps to solve the issue of program transferring to actual needs,” Li Chunling explained.
Speaking of graduates’ employment, Li Chunling said, “our statistics show that 13% graduates of the Economics and
