Using TOGAF™ to Evolve SOA Infrastructure into Mature Enterprise Architecture Global Energy Company
Overview
Service Oriented Architecture
(SOA) brings many business
reference groupbenefits to organizations,
especially the ability to respond
rapidly to business process
change for competitive
advantage.
Within one oil company’s
Exploration and Production
(E&P) segment there is a
department called Digital and
Communications Technology
(DCT). An E&P DCT SOA
program operates as a Centre of
Excellence (CoE) to provide
advice, guidance, and standards to projects. The CoE is staffed by
a mix of BP, IBM, and SAIC
staff and has established the E&P
DCT SOA Method, defining best
practice for SOA
implementations.

The Open Group Challenge For SOA to be effective in an organization as large and complex as an oil company, SOA implementations must follow a standardized method and reference architecture. Centralized governance is increasingly important as the service-oriented landscape matures. The DCT organization wished to adopt an industry standard architecture framework. In considering TOGAF™ as the primary candidate, it needs
to choose between wholesale adoption and re-engineering of processes in line with the framework, or using TOGAF as a reference for evaluating the E&P DCT SOA Method and identifying gaps. Solution The project began by mapping the SOA Method to the TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM) to use as the basis for future
SOA development work. Copyright © 2009, The Open Group. All rights reserved. sisted in the realization of integrating SOA with enterprise architecture and adding value to the business by reducing risk to the organization’s business process management practices. Business Outcomes • Providing consistency across architecture disciplines (SOA, EA, data management, etc.) has improved productivity, efficiency, and time-to-market. • Reduced learning curve of the enterprise architects and associated business costs has enhanced the capability of the business to accelerate business decision-making and solutions development.
