... and I'm pleased to say, the number of movies I've cried in as an adult remains at three. The Notebook, P.S. I Love You, and Toy Story 3 (don't ask).
In saying that, I feel I need to be honest with you and quantify that watching The Fault In Our Stars required every single shred of resistance within my tear ducts to not open up.
It's sad. Very sad. So sad I felt the need to txt my mother immediately after to warn her "it will destroy you" (she's a crier).
Before I get on to my review, I'm going to throw some numbers out there;
The Fault In Our Stars screened in Cinema Six at 5:40 last night
There were no seats remaining in Cinema Six
Cinema Six seats roughly 50-60 people
There were three males in the Cinema
I was the only one of those males who chose to watch this movie alone
Dangerous move on my part. I was hesitant to watch this one as I've not cried in a movie in a long time and, while I certainly see myself as a sensitive guy, blubbering from the back row is pretty much the equivalent to ripping up my 'man card'.
Had I had the cinema to myself, the heavy rain warning wouldn't have been the only downpour hitting the region.
So I think I've made the point that it's sad. But what it also is, is a great movie, with great characters, and an amazing story.
This movie, if you didn't know, is the film adaptation of John Green's best-selling novel of the same name.
In a sentence, the story is told by Hazel, a seventeen-year-old cancer patient, who meets and falls in love with a cocky-yet-charming ex-cancer patient named Augustus. The tagline for this movie is "one sick love story", and it is that exactly - a love story, with a central theme of cancer and the inevitability that the lead character will likely die as a result of her illness. Add to this several plot twists and turns, and you have the two-hour-plus runtime filled out.
The movie, like the book, is geared towards a teenage, female audience, and the movie at times certainly feel directed that way. There's some humour and some lines that I nearly rolled my eyes at, but stuck with it and within time I was engrossed.
Aside from the story (which of course is great, but the screenwriters did have a best-seller to work from), the characters are really what make this movie. They're all relatively new-comers to the big screen, with the exception of Willem Dafoe. Hazel, played by Shailene Woodley, excels as the lead, and you feel her plights. Augustus (Gus), played by Ansel Elgort, I hated at first as he was a bit of a douchebag, but once the inevitable plot twists came, he mellowed and became more human.
The movie feels a little shallow at moments - Gus justifies falling for Hazel "because you're beautiful" and "I like to look at beautiful things". I thought these lines quite juvenile, but I imagine the demographic was swooning at them.
Also do bear in mind that this is not so much of a happy movie. It's about cancer, and the struggles of sufferers and families living with it. It talks a lot of death and at times is grim, but balances this by looking at these themes with a light heart. I would not recommend this movie to anyone who has suffered a loss in the family due to illness recently.
At this point, I'm not sure what more I can say of The Fault in our Stars; the story and the characters were the real shining point to me, so much that the soundtrack, cinematography, and the techincal elements ceased to exist. I was interested only in the plot.
The Fault In Our Stars is reviewing positively right around the world, and it continues that trend right here. The movie is aimed toward teenage girls, yet I have no issue admitting I enjoyed it. Some of the humour and script felt a little juvenile (which I guess is the point), but at it's core it's a great love story, and you will feel for the struggles of the greatly casted characters. I didn't cry, but it took some willpower not to. If you're a cryer, bring the tissues.
Verdict; 9 out of 10
