C
hina has seen an increasing number of foreign residents while continuing to open up in the past decade, the latest population census shows.
A total of 845,697 foreigners were liv­ing on the Chinese mainland in 2020 when the seventh national census was
conducted, up about 250,000 from a de­cade ago.
Around 402,000 of them are male, according to the report of the once-in- a-decade survey, which was published by the National Bureau of Statistics on May 11.
Duan Chengrong, a demographic re­searcher in Beijing, said the increase in the number of foreigners over the past decade is a telltale sign of the sustained expansion of population of foreigners on the mainland as the country continues to open up.

Creating Jobs for the  Youth
The Ghanaian Government will speed up the implementation of its proposed Jobs and Skills Program to promote skill devel­opment and offer job oppor­tunities to the youth, Ghana^ Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta said on May 9.
The upcoming $200-million program will strengthen the ca­pacity of the private sector as well as small and medium en­terprises to create jobs for the youth, he said at a press briefing.The government will also launch eight new initiatives in the coming months in the health, tourism, trade, agriculture and infrastructure sectors to boost economic growth, which will contribute to job creation, said the minister.
The youth unemployment rate in the West African country in­creased to 9.46 percent in 2020, compared with the 9.1 percent re­corded a year earlier, data show.

Kenya has approved six stan­dards that will guide the devel­opment of eco-friendly cities that use infor
mation and communica­tions technology.
Bernai'd Njiraini, Managing Di­rector of Kenya Bureau of Stan­dards (KEBS), said on May 13 that the approved standards will facil­itate the transformation of urban infrastructure in a smart and sus­tainable way.<4As Kenya continues to rapidly urbanize, we increasingly rely on technological solutions to create sustainable living patterns, man­age resource consumption in w a­ter and energy, enhance smart in- frastructure development as well as tackle environmental challeng­es such as garbage disposal and recycling," said Njiraini in a state­ment released in Nairobi.
According to the KEBS, the ap­proved standards address issues such as real-time data and infor­matics exchange, smart trans­portation and electric power infrastructure.
Kenya is currently developing two smart cities namely Tatu and Konza.

Increased Average  Salary
The average salary of China’s urban employees saw growth in 2020 despite the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic,official data showed on May 19.
In non-private sectors, the real growth of the average salary for urban employees, adjusted for inflation, rose by 5.2 percent to 97,379 yuan (about $15,155), ac­cording to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.
In private sectors, the annu­al average salary stood at 57,727 yuan (about $8,942), up 5.3 per­cent year on year after deducting price factors.
Hie growth rate of the aver­age salary of urban employees in non-private sectors is at its low­est point since 1984, while that of the workers in private sectors dropped to its second-lowest point since 2009, according to the bureau.

frican countries on May 18 renewed commit­ments to revitalizing the health of women, children and adolescents as part of COVID-19 recovery.
Speaking at a virtual forum, senior policymakers from Nigeria, Malawi, South Africa, Liberia and Ken­ya said maternal, infant and adolescent health re­mained a top national priority despite pandemic-re- lated disruptions.
"Women, children, and adolescents have been sig­nificantly affected by COVID-19 that has devastated economies and affected social and community life," said Zweli Lawrence Mkhize, South African Minis­ter of Health.
Senior African policymakers, campaigners and researchers were among more than 1,000 delegates who participated in a two-day summit of Lives in the Balance : Equity in COVID-19 Response and Re­covery that kicked off on May 18.

Xi made the remarks during an inspection tour of Nanyang City in central China s Henan Province.
