1. Paradise Lost
Key: Paradise Lost is an epic poem in blank verse by the 17th-century English poet John Milton. The poem concerns the Christian story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Milton’s purpose, stated in Book I, is to “justify the ways of God to men” and elucidate the conflict between God’s eternal fore sight and free will.
2. Elegy
Key: In classical Greek and Roman poetry, elegies are the poems composed in hexameter and pentameter couplets. They can be of any subjects: love, lamentation to war and politics and so on. Since the 17th century, elegy has typically been used to refer to those poems that lament the loss of something or someone, or loss or death with no set metrical form. However in Elizabethan times it was also used to refer to certain love poems. Elegies written in English frequently take the form of the pastoral elegy.
