2. At the age of 17 years 64 days, Mack Rutherford has become the youngest person to fly around the world alone! Mack’s journey ar ound the world lasted five months and he flew across 52 countries in total. His record-breaking flight began in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, on 23 March, 2022. He was 16 years old when he took off and celebrated his 17th birthday by himself in his plane.
Mack faced many challenges during his adventure. Because of his small-sized aircraft, he had to land whenever the weather got too rough. However, at some points he literally (确实地) couldn’t land, such as when flying non-stop for 10 hours over an ocean. At other points, he faced extremely hot weather, such as in Dubai. In Sudan, a country in Africa, Mack also faced sandstorms which made it hard for him to see where he was going. Mack battled strong winds and pouring rain during his flight, but he never stopped smiling, joking and updating his flowers on his social media account along the way, and managed to expertly pilot his plane to safety.
And if Mack’s surname “Rutherford” sounds familiar, it’s because his elder sister Zara also flew around the world earlier this year, and still holds the female version of the record! The Rutherford siblings (兄弟妹) were inspired by their parents to become pilots. “I have known for certain I wanted to fly since I was eleven,” Mack said, “My dad Sam is a professional ferry pilot, my mum Beatrice is a recreational private pilot.”
Mack hopes to inspire young people to begin working towards their own goals, “No matter what background you have, I believe it is never too early to work towards your dreams and you shouldn’t limit yourself by others’ expectations.” With both feet firmly back on the ground now, it’s time for Mack to turn his attention towards catching up on his schoolwork!

3. In today’s world, cultural heritage—a term Yale University President Peter Salovey referred to as “the record of humanity”—is increasingly under attack by threats ranging from climate change, theft, mass tourism, and war. Historic buildings, works of art, traditions, and even local languages are disappearing at an increasingly rapid rate.
Yale is leading a new organization, the Global Consortium for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (GCPCH), to work on the preservation of cultural heritage. The first official meeting of the organization took place in Milan, Italy, which gathered 36 international university officials and experts from around the world to determine next
s teps for advancing GCPCH’s mission (使命).
During the meeting, experts and officials determined that the mission of GCPCH is to share knowledge and to promote relationships between the parties that seek to protect various forms of cultural heritage worldwide. More specifically, GCPCH will create a map of education programs and field experiences, research projects, and funding sources.
The two-day meeting of GCPCH was hosted by Bocconi University. It kicked off with an address by UNESCO Director—General Irina Bokova. “Knowledge-sharing gets all stakeholders (有利益关系者)involved at a global level,”said Bokova in her inspiring speech. “Together we need to strengthen the networks and build more bridges between all actors,”
Stefano Baia Curioni, vice-president of ASK Research Center of Bocconi University, co mmented on what an honor it was for Bocconi to host the meeting. “It is with great pleasure that we gather such a set of leaders who bring so many valuable points of view on challenges related to the preservation of cultural heritage,” Baia Curioni said. “We know how important the work of this body is to advancing our collective work, and are honored to support such efforts.”

4. Poaching (偷猎) is the leading threat to many of Africa’s species. It is reported that over the last ten years, a $23 billion global black market for illegal wildlife products has formed, and then the problem has turned into a race against extinction.
This new challenge means that new methods are needed. Luckily, WWF has been able to start the Wildlife Grime Technology Project (WCTP) to explore technological solutions to poaching. Through the WCTP, WWF set out to create an umbrella of technology tools to support rangers (护林人) in their anti-poaching efforts. A number of technologies have been tested over the years with different degrees of success, among which the thermal camera (热传感相机) has won its fame.
Poachers primarily operate at night under cover of darkness, getting into parks and reserves without being noticed. Some are killing wildlife for personal profit, while others are armed and backed by organized crime. Often equipped with little more than flashlights, government and community rangers have no chance of stopping them.
But what if park rangers could see in the dark? In an attempt to find a technology that can help rangers “see” at night, the WCTP identified thermal cameras as a solution. The technology has completely changed the way rangers operate at night. Since they began to use the camera in 2016, the reserve of Lake Nakuru has not had any elephants poached over the past 6 years. In Kenya’s 580-square-mile Maasai Mara National Reserve, long-range thermal cameras mounted on ranging vehicles allowed rangers to set up mobile outposts where poachers may appear. Since 2016, Mara Conservancy rangers have caught more than 300 poachers with the help of the camera.
