The bronze mask is 131cm wide, 71cm high, 66cm deep and weighs 131 kg. It is the largest and well preserved bronze mask unearthed at Sanxingdui Site. Its broad body, broad forehead, sharp edges and corners, smooth eyebrows, eyes, lips and other lines protrude out of the face, thick and long eyebrows are raised, and square perforations are found on both sides of the mask and in the middle of the forehead, which may be used for fixing purposes. The bronze mask is a typical artifact of Sanxingdui culture, more than 3000 years ago, which reflects the ancient Shu people's understanding and thinking of the natural world and the world of human beings and gods.
Sanxingdui Site is located in Guanghan City, Sichuan Province, about 40 kilometers south of Chengdu City. It is one of the most important ancient sites in the pre Qin period in southwest China. In 1986, thousands of precious cultural relics, such as bronze sacred trees, bronze Dali people, bronze masks, gold scepter, etc., were unearthed in the No. 1 and No. 2 "sacrificial pits". Thus, Sanxingdui Site "awoke and shocked the world", attracting worldwide attention.

Since December 2019, under the guidance and support of the State Administration of Cultural Relics, Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau has organized Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and other institutions to discover six new "sacrificial pits" in the area where No.1 and No.2 "sacrificial pits" are located, which are numbered from No.3 to No.8 respectively.
At the beginning of 2021, archaeologists began to excavate the No. 3 "sacrificial pit". By January 30 of that year, relatively complete bronzes had begun to appear. On March 16, the cultural relics buried in the pit were fully displayed, including bronze, jade, gold and ivory.
The bronze mask is located in the south of the middle of Pit No. 3. It is the first bronze object to emerge, which is particularly noticeable.
On June 23, 2021, the mask was extracted from the pit. After analyzing and studying the casting process of the bronze mask, the archaeologists and cultural relic protectors believed that the bronze mask was made by casting separately from the face, the back of t
he cheek, the eyes, the ears and other parts, and then combined into a whole. The silk fabric residue with warp and weft tissue was also found at the right eye of the mask.
