My Internship in Pizza Hut
By XXX
1. Introduction
During my internship, I worked in Pizza Hut, a biggest and best-known pizza chain restaurant in the world, which has been a subsidiary of Yum! Brands, Inc., the world's largest restaurant company. My workplace is located at NO.266, Wangdao Road, Yiwu city, Zhejiang Province. The Pizza Hut I worked covers a business area of 488 square meters and has more than 100 staff. It serves such food as pizza with different styles, Italian noodles, mushroom rice with roasted, fresh fruit salad, and some cool drinks. These foods are very popular, especially among the youths. So the business is doing well.
During these months, I worked in different positions. First waitress, then cashier, now I’m a trainer.
2. My Internship: Work, Thought and Achievement
During these 3 months, my work includes the following 3 parts:
1) Being a waitress
I was enrolled as a waitress. On the first day, everything seemed difficult for me. The manager told me that I should be familiar with the menu as soon as possible. For example, I need to know how many products in the menu how to call them. With the information, I need to learn how to pass on the dish, that is passing the dish from the kitchen window to customer’s table, and remind them of being careful with the hot dishes. It seemed easy, but I made some mistakes at the beginning, because I was really nervous and could not match the name with the real dishes. The manager was strict in training me to serve correctly at table and she even lost temper with me. After I could pass on the dishes correctly, I had to learn how to take the order. When the customers took seat, I would come to them and gave them the menu, writing down the dishes they want. I also made some mistakes due to carelessness. For example, customers wanted to a pizza with meatballs, while I thought it’s meatballs with rice, so when the wrong dishes came to the table, I must apologize for the m
istake and took some measures to deal with it. It was a tiring job. I must stand all day. My feet hurt so badly that I couldn't sleep at night.
2) Being a cashier
To my luckiest, the manager realized my improvements and efforts. So he wanted to promote me as a cashier. At first I didn't want to be a cashier because I heard one cashier should be responsible for looking around and trying to catch the person who wants to dine and dash. This is a very troublesome thing. By this way, I haven't enough courage and confidence to do it. However, during this period, I gained certain experience. For example, I remembered that one woman, together with her child went to our pizza hut for dinner, but they left without paying the bill. As a cashier, I had to pay for the dinner out of my pocket. This was not very lucky. From this matter I knew I should be more careful next time. So from that day I learnt to see whether guests pay the bill or not when they left. If I was busy, I would let other waitresses to help me see it. During the work, I found an unreasonable rule in our management system, that is , if cashiers overcharge, the money would go to the
bank, meanwhile, if cashiers undercharges, they would have to cover the loss by their own money. The manager agreed with me, but she said It couldn’t be changed immediately.
3) Being a trainer
The last month of my internship, the manager promoted me as a trainer who is responsible for training new staff. This means that I’ve got my salary raised, which made me very happy. So far, I tried to arrange things for them to do. Firstly, I taught them to be familiar with the table number and menu and told them how to pass on the dish. Besides, I told them something that should be paid attention to. When they learnt well enough, I taught them how to operate the computer as soon as possible, including how to make order in computer, how to select dishes in computer, and how to charge with computer and so on. Sometimes I also felt very impatient about their mistakes. They always made the same mistakes even though I'd said many times. For example, when we passed the dishes, we shouldn’t put the plastic tray on the table which would be considered to be an impolite act. However, the new employees couldn’t do it well. It made me really very frustrated sometimes. pizzaBut when they made progress in their work, I just felt a sense of achievement.
3. Summary
    1) From this internship I finally understand the teachers say that the school is one of the most pure places. In the school, if I made a mistake, it could be corrected. But now it needs some costs in the work. It makes me a little scared of the future life. Now I strive to work hard passionately to cope well with every problem. And I learn from others and correct my shortcomings once someone points out.
    2) No pains, no gains. During my internship, I met a lot of difficulties and frustration, but after my hard work, I just improved myself. To my luckiest, my manager realizes my improvements and offers me a lot of advices to work more efficiently and fruitfully. Though my salary is not high, I work happily with my colleagues’ everyday.
    3) I get the skills to deal with various people. When I went to work, I have to communicate with not only the manager, but the co-workers and customers. When I came across some communication problems, I became always patient, listening to others carefully and tried to find the ways to the problems.
