You're Going to be a Middle Schooler!
Wow, can you believe it? Soon you'll be a big kid in middle school! It's such an exciting time, but it can also feel a little scary with all the changes. Don't worry though, I'm here to share some tips on what to do when you start middle school so you can have the best experience. Just listen to your pal who has a few more years of elementary school wisdom!
First off, get ready for a big transition. Middle school is quite different from elementary school. You'll have to be very responsible by keeping track of homework assignments for different classes, bringing all the supplies you need, and getting yourself from one classroom to the next on time. No more having the same teacher all day long!
Speaking of classes, be prepared for things to get more challenging academically. The material will be more difficult across all your subjects - math, science, English, history, and everything else. You'll need to stay organized, pay close attention, and study hard. Don't slack off or you could fall behind.
Definitely take good notes in every class. Develop your note-taking skills because that will help you remember all the important concepts and details you're learning. You may want to get a different notebook or section in a binder for each class to keep yourself organized. And please, please don't be the class clown who tries to make the teacher laugh by being distracting and silly. That's so elementary school! In middle school, you need to take your studies seriously.
Another big change will be switching classes throughout the day. Can you imagine moving to a different room for every subject? You'll feel like a little nomad going from one place to the next. Make sure to note where each class is located so you don't get lost those first few weeks. Leave a little early so you have time to get to your next class before the bell rings.
Speaking of getting around the school, you'll probably get a locker or a couple lockers to store your books, supplies, coat, and other things. Practice opening those locks using the combination so you don't get stuck and end up late to class. And keep your locker neat and organized inside - you don't want old smelly food or missing assignments getting crammed in there.
react to do A locker also means you'll probably experience locker room for the first time for gym class. Don't be scared, but just know you'll need to bring a combination lock, gym clothes, and personal care items like deodorant. Quickly change into your gym uniform, secure your stuff, and listen to the teacher's instructions. Don't goof off or you may not pass!
While we're on the subject of gym, be ready to take fitness much more seriously. You'll be expected to really exert yourself during activities and exercises. No more just playing tag or doing some light calisthenics. Plus, you may have to master more advanced skills for sports and games. Don't slack off because gym class in middle school is a real grade, not just contributing to a general "Wellness" score.
You're also going to start meeting a lot more new people in middle school since the students will come from several different elementary schools in your area. That means you'll have the chance to make new friends and get to know all different types of kids your age. But it also means you have to put yourself out there, make conversation, and learn how to socialize with peers you don't already know. Don't just hang out with the same few kids from your old elementary school.
At the same time, don't be afraid if you and some friends drift apart naturally in middle school as you start exploring different interests, social groups, and extracurricular activities. That's all part of growing up and finding yourself during these important transitional years. Just try to always be kind, respectful, and make an effort to get to know kids who may seem a little different than you. Middle school is a great time to expand your social circle.
Speaking of extracurriculars, I highly recommend getting involved in at least one club, sports team or other after-school activity. It helps you make friends, learn new skills, and lo
oks really good when you apply for high school down the road. There are so many options - sports like basketball, soccer, track and swimming. Clubs for interests like art, music, computers, science, languages, and more. Or try something completely new that you've never done before! The key is finding an activity you genuinely enjoy, not just what your friends are doing.
Just don't overcommit and sign up for too many extracurriculars. You need to leave plenty of time for your homework and studying. Figure out a schedule that works for you and stick to it. Use an agenda or calendar to
