MBA 505-P:  Project Management
A good master plan for a project will include nine elements:  overview, objectives, general approach, personnel, resources, contractual aspects, evaluation, risks, and schedule.
This course is a project.  This syllabus is its master plan.
Overview
Definition:  This project involves the development of acumen for the planning and control of projects in general.
Justification:  The use of projects and project management continues to grow in our society and its organizations.  Businesses regularly are challenged to accomplish unique outcomes with limited resources under critical time constraints.  As a result, there is need for managers to become intimately familiar with the process of planning and controlling a project, which entails the application of insights and skills to the definition, scheduling, and monitoring of activities in order to meet or exceed stakeholder expectations from a project.
Deliverables and Milestones:selection project壁纸  The key deliverable is a set of fifty completed final exams that demonstrates said acumen (one exam for each member of the project team).  Milestones include the delivery of periodic homework assignments designed to provide a structured framework for honing skills useful for the successful completion of the project.
Timeframe:  The timeframe for this project is approximately 7 weeks.  Its start date is Tuesday, January 20, 2009, and its expected completion date is Thursday, March 5, 2009.
Costs:  Project costs include some stress and anxiety, a fair amount of sleep deprivation, and moments of minor (ok, sometimes major) frustration.
Limit of Scope:  The scope of this project is limited to concepts and methods for planning and controlling a project.  Because of the condensed timeframe and the relatively low cost of this project, some basics of project management will not be included in this project’s scope.  Examples of aspects that are beyond the scope of this project include project selection, organizational and socio-cultural issues, and multi-project resource scheduling.
Objective
The objective of this project is to master the principles of efficient project planning and control – needs analysis, work breakdown, scheduling, resource allocation, risk management, and performance tracking and evaluation – within the timeframe and cost projections stated in the overview section.
General Approach
Principles will be developed and explored through a series of project review meetings, with occasional supplements provided through a popular project management software package.  In addition, task teams of 5 or 6 members each will have the opportunity to hone insights through homework problem sets.
The project team may organize itself into task teams of 5 or 6 members each; however, if task teams are not in place by the third project review meeting, then the project manager will assist.
Project review meetings are planned for twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, for 80
minutes per session.  The meetings will be chaired by the project manager, and every member of the project team is invited to attend.  The purpose of these meetings is to share insights, to discuss progress, and to formulate action plans.
