The Big Differences Between Big Kid School and Little Kid School
Hi there! My name is Timmy and I'm 8 years old. My big sister Jessica just started her first year of college and she says it's really different from when she was in high school. Since I'm still just a little kid in elementary school, the whole idea of "college life" seems kind of weird and crazy to me. But my sister has been telling me all about how different it is, and I'll try my best to explain it here!
The first big difference is that in college, you don't have a set schedule of classes like we do in elementary school. In little kid school, we have the same schedule every day - math at 9am, reading at 10am, recess at 11am, and so on. But in college, Jessica gets to pick all her own classes and make her own schedule! She can have classes at different times every day
if she wants. Some days she only has one class, and other days she might have three or four. To me, that sounds like a nightmare! I like having my days planned out nice and neat.
Another huge difference is that you live right on the college campus when you go to college. Jessica lives in a big building called a "dorm" where her room is just one tiny little room with a bed and a desk. She has to share her room with another girl she didn't even know before! In our house, I have my own bedroom all to myself. I don't know how Jessica can stand having a roommate and living in such a tiny space. The dorm does have a shared bathroom for the whole floor though, which sounds pretty gross if you ask me!
At college, you also get way more freedom than in high school. In high school, Jessica had to ask for a pass every time she needed to go to the bathroom or whatnot. But in college, she can just come and go whenever she pleases! She doesn't have to raise her hand or anything. Jessica also gets to pick her own classes and her own major, which is the subject she'll focus on the most. I can't even imagine getting to make that many choices at school. At my age, we get told what to do all day long!
Jessica says one of the hardest things about college is having no parents around to take care of you. At home, Mom and Dad would make sure we had food to eat, did our laundry, cleaned our rooms, and stuff like that. But in college, Jessica is totally on her own! She has to buy and cook all her own food, do her own laundry, clean her dorm room, and all those grown-up responsibilities. She says it's a lot of work on top of all her classes and studying. Sometimes she misses home a lot.
There's also wayyyy more schoolwork and assignments in college compared to high school. In high school, Jessica would maybe have a few worksheets or short writing assignments to do every night. But in college, she has huge research papers, labs, and really hard exams. Sometimes she stays up almost all night long working on her assignments! I'll be lucky if I ever have to work that hard in elementary school. We just have simple little homework packets.
Despite the heavy workload, Jessica tells me that college life has a lot more fun things too. In high school, there were lots of rules about what you could and couldn't do. But in col
lege, Jessica goes to parties, joins clubs, goes on trips with her friends, and does whatever she wants in her free time. There's waaaay more freedom than in high school. She even gets to pick her own bedtime!
One other big difference is that you don't live at home with your parents when you're at college. I really can't imagine what that would be like! At home, I have Mom to cuddle me when I'm scared and Dad to play video games with me. Without Mom and Dad around all the time, I'm sure I'd get really lonely. Jessica says she misses them a lot but it's also nice to be independent and not have them nagging her all the time. I don't know how I'd survive without my parents doing everything for me though!
So in summary, college is pretty much the opposite of little kid school and high school. You get way more freedom and independence, but also way more responsibilities and schoolwork. Instead of having the same schedule every day, you make your own schedule. You live on campus without your parents. And you get to pick your own classes and major instead of just being told what to do. It sounds pretty confusing and overwhelming if you as
sort of和kind of的区别
k me! But Jessica seems to be enjoying her new life in college, even though it's a huge adjustment. I'm just glad I'm still a little kid and I've got a few more years before I have to start worrying about any of that craziness!
