    The Wonderful World of Animal Sounds
    Animals make all sorts of interesting noises and sounds. Some sounds are cute, some are scary, and some are just plain funny! I love listening to the different animal sounds around my neighborhood and trying to figure out what creatures are making them.
    One of my favorite animal sounds is the "meow" of a cat. Cats make this noise to get attention or when they are feeling happy and friendly. My neighbor's cat Mittens always meows at me when I walk by. She rubs against my legs and meows over and over until I pet her soft fur. Kittens have an especially sweet and tiny "mew" that makes me smile.
    Dogs make some of the most amusing sounds of any animal. The classic "woof" bark can
mean lots of different things depending on how deep or high-pitched it is. Sometimes dogs let out a long, drawn-out "arrrrroooooooo" howl, which sounds almost haunting. My dog Buddy makes a playful "ruff ruff" noise when he wants to go for a walk or play fetch. When he's begging for treats, he does a really whiny, drawn-out "hhhhhnnnnnrrrrrgggggg" groan that always makes my parents laugh.
    At night, I can hear the "hoo hoo hoo" calls of owls in the trees near my house. Owls make different hoots and screeches depending on if they are claiming territory, warning others, or trying to find a mate. Some owl sounds are gentle and calming, while others are harsh screeches that make me shiver a bit! I've also heard the flapping of their big wings as they swoop by.

My aunt has a little farm with chickens and whenever I visit, their clucking and cackling always cracks me up. Baby chicks make an even higher-pitched "cheep cheep cheep" peeping noise that is super cute. Sometimes the rooster lets out a loud "cock-a-doodle-doo!" in the morning to start the day.
    Cows have a very distinctive "moooooooo" lowing call that echoes across the pastures and fields near my town. I love the sound of cowbells clanging in the distance as the cows graze and wander around. Every now and then you'll hear a higher-pitched "mooooeeeeee" if a mama cow gets separated from her baby calf.
    At my uncle's farm last summer, I got to hear all the different noises pigs make. They make a sort of "oink oink" grunting noise when calling for food, and an even louder "SNORT" through their snouts. The piglets make an incredibly cute "WEEEEEEEEE" squealing and crying noise whenever they get scared or want their mom. Pigs are hilarious!
    One animal sound that always makes me a little nervous is the buzz and hum of bees and wasps. They make that harsh "zzzzzzzzz" droning noise as they flit around flowers and trees. A few times I've accidentally stepped too close to a bee hive and let me tell you, when a swarm of bees gets riled up it sounds like a terrifying "ZZZZZZZZZZZ" roar! I run away as fast as I can.
    Frogs and insects make some of the most interesting outdoor sounds during the warm s
ummer nights. Crickets and cicadas make a sort of "creeeeeeeek" or "zizizizizizizi" hissing and trilling racket as the sun goes down. My dad showed me how to cup my hands a certain way to mimic the noises. Down by the creek, there are thousands of tiny frogs that make a deafening "BRRRRRRREEEKKKEKKKEKKEK" croaking racket whenever it rains. Sometimes I record their sounds on my phone just because they are so funny.
    At the zoo, I've gotten to hear the loud roars, growls, hoots, and screeches of lions, tigers, monkeys, and exotic birds. Large animals like gorillas make a sort of rumbling "HUUUUUUUUUHHHH HUHHHHHHH" grunting noise from deep in their chests that sounds almost like a lawnmower. Seals and sea lions make a silly "ARF ARF" barking noise when they want food or attention.
    Those are just a few of my favorite animal sounds from around my hometown and the zoo. Listening carefully to the different noises animals make is one of my favorite activities. I have so much fun trying to identify each creature just from the sounds. Who knows, maybe I'll become an animal sound expert when I grow up!

    Animal Sounds Around Us
    Do you ever stop to listen to all the different sounds animals make? I love listening to the animals around my neighborhood and trying to figure out what each sound means. Let me tell you about some of the cool animal sounds I've noticed!
    One of the most common sounds I hear is the chirping of birds. Birds make so many different chirps, tweets, and songs. I've learned that birds chirp and sing for a few reasons - to warn others about danger, to attract a mate, or just because they're happy! My favorite bird sound is the beautiful singing of the robin. Robins have a really pretty, musical song that makes me feel cheerful when I hear it.
    Another bird sound I pay attention to is the loud "caw caw" of the crows. Crows are very smart birds and their cawing almost sounds like they're trying to talk to each other. Sometimes I see big groups of crows all cawing together up in the trees and I wonder what they're discussing! Their calls are harsh but also kind of cool sounding.
    Cats make some very interesting sounds too. We all know the classic "meow" that cats use to get our attention or ask for food. But did you know cats also chirp, trill, purr, hiss, and growl? Each sound means something different. A purr means a cat is happy and content, while a growl warns that the cat feels threatened. My cat makes this funny chirping sound when she sees a bird out the window - I think it's because she wishes she could go catch it!
