    My Hometown's Environment Needs Help
My name is Jamie and I'm a 4th grader at Oakwood Elementary School. I love my hometown of Riverdale. It's a nice small town with friendly people, pretty parks, and lots of fun activities to do outdoors. But lately, I've been noticing some problems with our environment that make me worried about the future of our town.
The biggest issue is all the litter and trash that keeps piling up everywhere. It seems like every time I go to the park or walk along the trails by the river, I see plastic bags, bottles, food wrappers and other garbage just left behind. It makes those beautiful natural areas look so messy and rundown. All that litter is really bad for wildlife too. Animals can get sick from eating or getting tangled up in the plastic and trash we leave behind.
Another problem is that there's way too much car exhaust pollution in Riverdale. At school drop-off and pick-up times, there's always a huge line of idling cars spewing out smelly fumes. And the traffic on Main Street is terrible - it's basically a big parking lot during rush hours with all those vehicles stuck not moving but still running their engines. My mom says breathing in that dirty air isn't healthy, especially for kids like me with asthma. She has to keep the windows closed a lot to keep the exhaust fumes out of our house.
Stormwater runoff seems to be an issue too, now that I think about it. Whenever we get heavy rains, there's flooding in some neighborhoods because the storm drains can't handle all that water. And I've noticed the runoff from streets and parking lots leaves a gross brown murky mess in the creek that runs through town. That's no good for the fish, frogs, and other critters living in that creek.
These are some pretty big environmental problems for a small town like ours. But I have some ideas for how we could make things better and cleaner in Riverdale:
We need more trash and recycling bins around town, especially in popular hangout spots
sort of clublike parks, trails, and downtown. The bins should be really big so they don't overflowand have clear labels showing what can be recycled. Studentvolunteers could help makesurecans and bottles get properly recycled.
Schools should teach kids from an early age how important it is to properly dispose of litter and not dump trash on the ground. Everyelementary class could evenadopt a section of park or streetand be responsible for keeping that area litter-free.
The town should organize community clean-up days a few times a year where everyone comes together to do a huge spruce-up of public spaces like parks, streets, and nature areas. Picking up litter is a great way to take pride in our hometown!
We could cut down on vehicle exhaust emissions by encouraging more families to walk, bike, orcarpool to school and work when possible instead of driving solo. Bike lanes should be added on main roads to make cycling safer. The town could alsooffer incentives for people to drivehybrid or electric vehicles that don't pollute as much.
Planting more trees around Riverdale would help filter air pollution while providing shade and making our neighborhoods look nice and green. Tree-planting activities would be a fun way to get kids involved in community service.
The town drainage system definitely needs improving to prevent flooding after heavy storms. Equipment that uses natural landscaping features like ponds and marshes should be installed to better absorb stormwater runoff. And people need to be educated about reducing runoff pollution by properly disposing of motor oil, cleaning up after pets, and avoiding over-use of fertilizers and pesticides.
I know fixing all of our environmental problems won't be easy, but even kids like me can do our part. At school, my class has started up a recycling program and "trash-free lunch" challenge. We're learning about how small behavior changes, like using reusable water bottles and bags, can make a big difference. My family has also made some "green" adjustments like driving less, recycling more, and conserving energy at home.
I really care about protecting the environment of my hometown because Riverdale is suc
h a special place to me. I've grown up swimming and fishing at Willow Lake, hiking the woodland trails, and enjoying the clean air and natural beauty here. I want to make sure our pretty town stays healthy and unpolluted for future generations. Dealing with issues like litter, air pollution, and stormwater runoff should be a priority so kids after me can experience the joys of an unspoiled landscape too.
