My Family's Big Changes
Hello everyone! My name is Emily and I'm a 6th grader at Maple Grove Elementary School. Today I want to tell you all about the huge changes that have happened in my family over the last couple of years. Some have been really exciting, while others were pretty difficult. But I've learned that change, even when it's hard, can bring new adventures and opportunities.
The biggest change started when my dad got a job offer in a new city about 3 hours away from where we lived. My parents discussed it for a long time. On one hand, the job paid a lot more money and could provide more for our family. But on the other hand, we'd have to move away from our hometown where all our relatives lived nearby.
After lots of long conversations, they decided to take the job and move. I was really sad to leave my friends, teachers, my bedroom, and our neighborhood that felt so familiar. My little brother Tommy, who was only 4 years old at the time, didn't fully understand what was happening at first.
The process of selling our house and packing up all our belongings was hectic and stressful for the whole family. We had to sort through years and years of stuff accumulated in the attic, garage, and basement. Some things we sold or donated, but we packed up the most important items to take with us.
Finally, moving day arrived. Huge truck pulled up and the movers started loading all the boxes. Tommy cried when they took his bed because he didn't want to leave his room. I felt like crying too, watching our house get emptied out.
sort of club But then we hit the road to our new city! The drive felt long but we made it a little adventure, stopping at parks along the way and staying in a hotel overnight. When we arrived, it was overwhelming - new streets, new neighborhoods, new surroundings. Nothing
was familiar.
Our new house needed some work before we could move in - new paint, cleaning, putting furniture together. So we stayed in a temporary apartment for a few weeks. My parents seemed stressed but tried to stay positive, saying this was an exciting opportunity.
Once we were all settled into the new place, more changes came. My dad started his new job and had longer hours. My mom got a job too after being a stay-at-home mom when we lived in our old city. So both of them were gone at work more during the days.
Tommy and I had to start new schools, which was scary at first. I missed my old friends a lot but tried to make an effort to make new ones. Tommy had a harder time adjusting and missed his old preschool.
Another big change was meeting new extended family members we didn't know well before. My dad's brother and parents lived a couple hours from our new city. We started visiting them for holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, which was nice but also kind of awkward as we weren't used to their traditions and way of celebrating.
One of the hardest parts of our family's changes was being far away from my mom's side of the family - my grandmother, aunts, uncles, and cousins. We went from seeing them every week to only being able to visit maybe twice a year for things like summer vacation. I really missed cousins around my age that I used to play with all the time. Holidays weren't the same without the big family gatherings we were used to.
There were a lot of adjustments, but there were positive changes too. My parents seemed more motivated and energized by their career opportunities in the new city. And even though we didn't have

Changes in My Family
A lot has changed with my family over the past few years! When I was younger, it was just me, my mom, and my dad living together. But now there are some new additions and people who have moved out on their own. I'll tell you all about the changes in my family.
The biggest change was when my little sister Lily was born three years ago. I was really excited to have a baby sister, but I didn't realize how much work babies are! Lily cried a lot as a newborn and kept my parents up all night. I remember having to be really quiet when I came home from school so I didn't wake her up from her naps.
As Lily grew from a baby into a toddler, she got a lot more fun! She's a silly, happy kid who loves to laugh and play games. I taught her how to play patty-cake and sing kid's songs. She's obsessed with the movie Frozen and dresses up like Elsa all the time. Whenever the song "Let It Go" comes on, she begs me to sing along and act it out with her. I have to admit, she's pretty cute!
My parents have changed a lot too since Lily was born. They seem a lot more tired and stressed than before. Between taking care of Lily, working, and doing housework, they have a lot on their plates. But they still make time to help me with my homework and go to all my soccer games and music recitals.
