Dear Mom and Dad,
I'm writing this letter to you from my dorm room at university! I still can't believe I'm actually here. It feels like just yesterday I was begging you to let me have a pet dinosaur. Now I'm all grown up and living on my own at college. Crazy, right?
The first few days were pretty overwhelming if I'm being honest. There's so much to get used to - finding all my classes, meeting new people, learning where everything is on this huge campus. My roommate seemed nice at first but then I realized he actually sleeps hanging upside down from the ceiling like a bat! Just kidding, he's a regular human guy. Though I don't know much about him yet besides that his name is Mark and he's from a few towns over.
My favorite class so far is probably astronomy. We get to look through these gigantic telescopes and study planets, stars, black holes, and stuff. The professor says I have a real talent for identifying constellations! Who knows, maybe I'll end up being an astronaut when I grow up. Wouldn't that be cool? I'd be the first kid from our neighborhood to go to space. I can see it now - "Captain Sarah Johnson of the United Planets Starship Explorer." Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?
On the other hand, I'm really struggling with my math class. It's called "Calculus I" which sounds incredibly fancy and difficult. Basically we have to solve all these crazy equations filled with numbers, letters, it's enough to make my head spin! The professor just drones on and on during lectures. I've been trying to follow along but a lot of it goes right over my head. Maybe you could help me study when I come home for holiday break? You were always better at that sort of thing than me.
In my free time, I've been exploring the campus and the town. There's a beautiful creek that runs right behind the dorms and lots of squirrels and birds all over the place. It reminds
me of that time we went camping in the mountains when I was little and I kept trying to chase after the chipmunks! Speaking of animals, they have a huge area on campus with horses, cows, pigs, and other farm animals for the agricultural studies students. I'm planning to go pet the baby calves this weekend.
There's also the classic college experiences I've been having - staying up late eating pizza and candy with friends, going to parties (don't worry, I'm being responsible!), and cheering my lungs out at the football games. Our school's mascot is a ferocious looking tiger which is pretty awesome if you ask me. I bought a stuffed tiger and I'm going to have you sign his paw when you visit!
Oh and you'll never guess who I ran into the other day - Mrs. Anderson, my 2nd grade teacher! She's a professor here now teaching education classes. She still recognizes me and everything. I stopped to chat with her for a bit and she told me I've really grown into a mature, smart young woman. Can you believe that? Little me, a mature young woman! It's weird to think how much time has passed since I was a kid in her class.
I have to admit, as great as it's been, I do get homesick sometimes. The other night I got really sad missing you, Dad's awful puns, Mom's home-cooked meals, fighting with my annoying little brother (please give him a noogie for me). But then I remembered that coming to university and being on my own is an incredible opportunity. I'm getting an education, meeting new people, experiencing the world in a way I never could back home. As happy as I am though, I can't wait for you both to come visit soon!
I should probably get going for now. I have a ton of reading to do before class tomorrow (boooring). But I'm going to try and write once a week to keep you updated on what's happening here. Mom, Dad, thank you for everything. For always believing in me, encouraging me to follow my dreams, and most importantly - feeding me all those vegetables when I was little so I could grow up big and strong! I miss you and love you more than words can say.
Your daughter,
Sarah

Dear Mom and Dad,
I miss you so much! University is very different from home. Everything is so big and there are so many people around. I get lost sometimes trying to find my classrooms. The buildings are like castles and the hallways are like mazes. But I'm making lots of new friends which is fun.
My roommate's name is Jamie. They are really nice and we've become best friends already. Jamie's from a small town kind of like ours but further away. We stay up late talking and laughing and Jamie showed me how to make microwave popcorn in our little microwave in our room. The popcorn bags make such a racket when they start popping! It makes us jump every time but then we just laugh.
sort of club The dining halls are crazy! There's so much food to choose from. They have everything - pizza, burgers, salads, pasta, you name it. But a lot of it is kind of weird and fancy compare
d to what we eat at home. I tried this thing called "quiche" the other day and it was basically just an egg pie. Strange but not bad! I still miss your cooking though. Nothing beats your meatloaf and mashed potatoes.
