    Being Useful - My Goal in Life
    Ever since I was a little kid, I've wanted to be useful. I know that might sound kind of strange coming from someone my age, but it's true. While other kids dreamed of becoming astronauts or professional athletes, my biggest dream was just to be helpful and make a positive difference in the world around me.
    I'm not really sure where this desire came from initially. Maybe it was from seeing my parents and grandparents always stepping up to lend a hand to friends, neighbors and members of our community whenever they could. Or perhaps it stemmed from hearing so many stories about regular people doing extraordinary things to aid others in need. Regardless of its origins, the longing to be a useful, contributing member of society took root
inside me at an early age and has only grown stronger over time.
    To me, being useful means taking an active role in making your corner of the world a little bit better through your actions and choices each day. It's about pitching in and doing your part, no matter how small that part may sometimes seem. It's seeing a need and doing what you can to fill it rather than just passing by or waiting for someone else to eventually get around to it. Most of all, it's living with an attitude of service and always striving to put a little more good out into the world than you're taking from it.
    Even now, as a middle schooler, there are so many opportunities all around to be useful if you just keep your eyes open and are willing to put in a little effort. Things like:

    Volunteering with community organizations that feed the homeless, clean up parks, or collect supplies for those in need
    Tutoring younger kids who are struggling with reading, writing, or other academic skills

    Picking up litter whenever I see it instead of just walking by
    Always striving to be kind, considerate, and look out for others in whatever situation I find myself
    The list could go on and on, but you get the idea. There's no act too small or insignificant when it comes to being useful and trying to make a positive impact.
    My ultimate dream is to one day have a career where I can spend my working hours being directly useful to others and society in a really meaningful way. I've thought about things like becoming a teacher, doctor, social worker, engineer helping to design solutions for challenges facing humanity, or maybe even a public servant working for the greater good of the community.
    No matter what path I end up on though, you can be sure that the driving force behind my choices will always be that deep-rooted aspiration to lead a useful existence - one where I'm making the world ever so slightly better than it was before through both my vocation and the way I choose to live my life.
    I know there will be plenty of obstacles and difficulties along the way. Not everyone shares this priority of wanting to be useful above all else, so I'm sure I'll face discouragement, ridicule, and pressures to take an easier path at times. Some might say I'm being naive or idealistic. Others might urge me to focus more on making money or obtaining power and status.
    Whenever I feel those doubts creeping in though, all I'll need to do is think back to the deep fulfillment I've already experienced from seemingly small acts of usefulness like helping a little old lady carry her groceries or volunteering at a food bank. Those are the moments that have given me a taste of the true joy and purpose that comes from making a positive difference, no matter how modest. And that's what will keep me stubbornly holding
onto this goal to be a useful, giving person who makes the world a little bit better in the process.
    In a society that often seems to value money, fame, and individual success above all else, some might see being useful as an odd or unexciting life pursuit, especially for a kid. For me though, it's the only thing that really matters and the highest ideal to strive towards. If I can make it to the end of my days and look back on a life well-lived where I rolled up my sleeves and put in an honest effort to be of service in whatever way I could, then I'll consider myself incredibly blessed and successful in the ways that truly count.
    So call me a weirdo middle schooler if you want, but this is the hill I've chosen to die on. Being useful is and will remain my life's driving purpose and passion.The rest is just details.
