    Tiananmen Square

    Tiananmen Square is a huge open area right in the center of Beijing, the capital city of China. It's one of the biggest public squares in the whole world! Whenever my family visits Beijing, we always make sure to spend time walking around Tiananmen Square because there is so much to see and do there.
    The first thing you notice about Tiananmen Square is just how massive it is. The square itself covers an area of about 100 acres, which is bigger than 90 football fields! Even with the tens of thousands of people that can fit in the square at once, it never feels too crowded because the square is so spacious.
    In the center of the square, there is a huge portrait of Mao Zedong hanging on the gate to the Forbidden City. Mao was a very important leader in Chinese history. The portrait is so big, it's hard to miss! In front of the portrait, there are two huge structures called the Huabiao that look like pillars reaching up into the sky. People like to take photos in front of these iconic landmarks.
    To the side of Mao's portrait, there are two ancient buildings called the Qianmen Gate and the Zhengyang Gate that have beautiful glazed tile roofs. These gates used to be the entrances to the Inner City of Beijing back when it was surrounded by a giant city wall. While most of the wall is gone now, you can still see part of it at the southern edge of Tiananmen Square. I always enjoy walking along what's left of the old city wall and imagining what Beijing must have looked like hundreds of years ago when the entire city was enclosed by those defensive stone walls.
    Another fascinating place inside Tiananmen Square is the Monument to the People's Heroes. It's a huge memorial sculpture that was built to honor the brave soldiers and civilia
ns who fought for liberation and revolution in China. The monument has some very detailed carvings of people on all four sides and it's a important place for citizens to pay respect.
    My favorite part of Tiananmen Square, though, is the National Museum of China located right on the eastern side of the square. It's one of the biggest museums in the world and it has an incredible collection of exhibits on Chinese history, culture, and art. The museum building itself is a work of art, with its grand architecture and bright yellow glazed tiles.
    Inside the museum, they have replicas of ancient bronzes, ceramics, jade carvings, and calligraphy that date back thousands of years to China's earliest dynasties. Seeing those priceless historical artifacts up close is amazing. They also have exhibitions on more recent history like the Communist revolution and the founding of modern China after 1949.
    I could spend days exploring all the different galleries in that museum! My favorite exhibits are the ones on ancient Chinese inventions and technology like the seismometer, the water clock, and the printing press. It's crazy to think that many modern innovations we use today, like paper money and the compass, were actually invented in China centuries a
go. The museum does an excellent job explaining the importance and ingenuity behind each of those inventions.
    After touring the museum's indoor exhibits, there are also some fascinating outdoor exhibitions in the courtyard area. Last time we visited, they had real archaeological excavation pits set up where you could see archeologists carefully digging and cataloging artifacts like pottery shards, bones, and tools. Getting to watch the archaeologists at work like that was a really cool experience and helped me appreciate how much time and effort goes into preserving history.
    At night, the entire square takes on a different vibe as every sculpture, gate, and building gets illuminated by beautiful lighting displays. The square almost seems to glow under the night sky. People still fill the area, but it's more relaxed after the sun goes down. Some nights, there are even outdoor performances or movie screenings happening in Tiananmen Square that anyone can watch for free.
    Whether it's during the bright daylight hours or under the twinkling evening lights, Tianan
men Square always has something interesting happening. Every time my family goes, we discover something new to experience or learn about China's rich history and culture. Tiananmen Square truly is the heartbeat and symbol of Beijing, so no trip to the city would be complete without spending quality time there. I can't wait until my family's next visit so I can continue to explore this amazing public space!

    Tiananmen Square is one of the most amazing places I've ever been to! It's a huge square right in the center of Beijing, the capital city of China. Whenever my family has visitors from out of town, we always take them on a tour of this incredible landmark.
