My Trip to the Red Mountain Zoo
Last weekend, my family and I went to the Red Mountain Zoo. It was so exciting! I had been looking forward to this trip for weeks. We arrived right when the zoo opened at 9am and I could barely contain my energy as we walked through the entrance gate.
The first exhibit we came to was the Zoovenirs Gift Shop right near the entrance. Mom said we could come back there before leaving to get a treat if we were good. Then we walked a little further and arrived at the Zoovenirs Restaurant & Food Court area. The smells wafting from there made my stomach rumble. We decided to grab a quick snack of soft pretzels before heading into the animal exhibits.
After snacking, we walked down the path towards the first animal area - the Wetlands Trail. This trail had lots of birds like herons, flamingos, and pelicans along with turtles, frogs, and beavers in naturalistic wetland habitats. My favorite was probably the flamingos because of their bright pink feathers. We spent quite a while on this trail taking everything in.

Next, we crossed over to the North America Trail which had animals like bison, elk, bighorn sheep, and my beloved grizzly bears. The grizzly bear enclosure was incredible - it had a stream running through it and lots of tall trees and rocks for the bears to climb on. One of the bears was taking a nap in the sunshine which made me laugh. The zookeepers said they have to eat a lot to bulk up for hibernation during the winter.
After that, we made our way over to the South America Trail which featured animals like jaguars, giant anteaters, and a super cool aviary with toucans and parrots. The jaguars were prowling around their habitat looking very powerful and sleek. In the aviary, we saw some schoolkids learning about the rainforest birds which looked fun.
We were getting a little tired by this point, so we stopped for an early lunch at the Food Court near the Wetlands Trail entrance. I had a hot dog and lemonade which really hit the spot. After re-fueling, we headed over toward Africa.
The Africa Trail transported us to another world with its elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions, and more. The elephants were my favorite here - they used their trunks to spray water everywhere which was hilarious and refreshing on the warm day. The lion enclosure had a cool panoramic viewing area where the lions seemed just feet away through the glass.
At this point my feet were getting sore, but I didn't want to leave yet. We went on the monorail Sky Ride which took us on an elevated loop around parts of the zoo, giving us a bird's eye view of the exhibits below. It was a great way to rest our legs after all the walking.
For our last stop, we went to the Children's Zoo to pet and brush some of the tamer domestic animals like goats, sheep, cows, and ponies. I loved brushing the goats - their fur was so soft! We even got to watch a zookeeper give a talk about the animals and bring so
me out for the kids to see up close.
After that, we were all tuckered out, so we swung by the Gift Shop on our way out and I convinced Mom and Dad to get me a stuffed grizzly bear to remember my favorite part of our amazing day at the zoo. I can't wait until our next trip back!

A Trip to Red Mountain Animal Park
Last weekend, my family took me on a really fun trip to Red Mountain Animal Park! I've been wanting to go for so long because I just love animals. We left early in the morning so we could spend the whole day there.
When we first arrived, we stopped at the entrance to get our map and tickets. The lady at the booth was super nice and told us all about the different exhibits and shows they have. She said we should start by heading to the Wetlands Trail on the left side of the park.
The Wetlands Trail was so cool! It's a long boardwalk that winds through a big swampy area with lots of ponds and marshes. We saw SO many awesome birds there. My favorite was the huge sandhill cranes strutting around. They were as tall as me! There were also some funny-looking birds called anhingas drying their wings in the sun. The guide told us they are sometimes called "snake birds" because they swim with just their skinny neck sticking out of the water.
After the Wetlands Trail, we went to the Florida Manatee Harbor. This was an indoor aquarium area where you could see manatees swimming around. They look like big potato-shaped blobs but they're actually really cute up close. A park ranger told us all about how manatees are endangered and what they're doing to help protect them. My little brother's favorite was the baby manatee swimming and playing right up by the glass!
Next, we walked over to Wallaroo Station which is where the kangaroos and wallabies live. They are in this big grassy area with shady trees that's sort of like an Australian outback scene. We even got to go inside and watch a zookeeper do a show with some of t
hem! The littlest wallabies would let the zookeeper pick them up and pet them. I thought it was adorable how they would snuggle up in her arms. The big red kangaroos were impressive too, especially the male with the muscular arms and huge feet.
