Dear Li Mei,sort of order
I heard you've been having a tough time with English class lately. Don't feel bad - English can be really hard, especially when it's not your first language. I struggled a lot too when I was first learning. But I've picked up some tricks over the years that have really helped me, and I want to share them with you!
The first thing is to not get discouraged. Learning a new language takes a lot of time and practice. There will be days when you feel like you're just not getting it, and that's okay! Everybody has ups and downs when they're learning. The important thing is to keep trying and not give up.
My biggest suggestion would be to try to use English as much as you can, even outside of class. The more you use it, the more natural it will start to feel. You could start reading kids' books or watching cartoons in English. At first, you might not understand everything, but if you keep doing it, your brain will start picking up patterns and meanings. You could also try keeping a diary in English, or just making a habit of describing things you see out loud in English when you're by yourself.
Another really helpful thing is to find English music, movies, or TV shows that you enjoy, and pay close attention to the lyrics or dialogue. Pause frequently and repeat what you hear out loud. That'll help train your ears to the rhythms and sounds of English. You can also try reading along with subtitles or looking up words you don't know.
If you're allowed, bring an English-Chinese dictionary to class and use it to look up words you're struggling with. Getting a kids' picture dictionary can be super useful too, since you can look at the pictures to help figure out meanings. Don't be afraid to ask your teacher for help understanding things - that's what they're there for!
Something else that could be fun is finding a pen pal who's learning Chinese. You can practice writing to each other in the languages you're learning. Having someone to actually use the language with helps it stick in your brain way better.
When you're working on homework, make sure you set up a good study space. Find a quiet spot with few distractions. Maybe play some calm, instrumental music in the background if that helps you concentrate. Take lots of little breaks to avoid burnout. And don't be too hard on yourself - Rome wasn't built in a day! Just keep chipping away at it.
If there are certain concepts you're really getting stuck on, it might help to use mnemonics or make up silly rhymes, songs, or visualization tricks to remember them. Making vocabulary flashcards with pictures can help words stay in your memory too.
It's also a good idea to speak out loud as much as you can when you're practicing. Record yourself reading passages or vocabulary lists, then play it back and repeat after your recording. Moving your mouth muscles in that unnatural way reinforces the pronunciation.
If you have friends or family members who are good at English, don't be shy about asking them for help! They might be able to explain things in a way that clicks for you. Or you could set up language practice sessions where you just chat with them in English.
Most importantly, try to make learning English fun for yourself! Treat yourself to little rewards when you make progress. Decorate your English notebook with stickers if you're into that sort of thing. Find YouTube videos or games that let you pick up vocabulary in a low-pressure way.
Learning a new language is always tough at first, but if you stick with it, I promise it'll start getting easier and easier. Pretty soon, you'll be breezing through those English assignments! Just don't get discouraged, ask for help when you need it, and keep at it bit by bit every day. You've got this!
Your friend,

My Friend Li Mei is Having Trouble with English
Li Mei is my best friend. We've known each other since we were tiny tots in Mrs. Wang's kindergarten class. Li Mei is really smart and good at lots of things, like art, music, and sports. But there's one subject that she struggles with – English.
I remember when we were in first grade, and our English teacher, Miss Linda, would ask us to read out loud from our little reading books. Li Mei would get all flustered and her face would turn as red as a tomato. She'd stumble over the words and sometimes even start crying because she felt so frustrated.
Now that we're in fifth grade, English is getting even harder. We have to write compositions, learn grammar rules, and memorize lots of new vocabulary words every week. Li Mei works really hard, but she just can't seem to get the hang of it. The other day, she got a D- on her English test and she was so upset that she didn't even want to come to school the next day.
