The Torch Festival
Since I came to work in Liangshan,Sichuan province, I have learned a lot of customs of Yi people. One of them is The Torch Festival.
The Torch Festival usually falls on the 24th or 25th day of the sixth month of the Chinese lunar calendar with 3 days celebrations among some ethnic groups in south-western China. The Torch Festival is the most important and long-standing traditional event to the Yi people. This festival has lasted for thousands years with wide influence and great significance.
The Torch Festival comes from the ancient Yi people’s worshiping of fire. They believed that fire could drive away ghosts and evils. Yi people want to pray for good harvest and good things in the next year by lightening the torch.
The first day of the celebration, Yi people usually kill animals and share with others and lighten the torch in an old way. It called the day of sacrificing of fire.
