    A Really Big Day
Today was such an exciting day at school! We had our coming of age ceremony and our parents all came to watch. I've been looking forward to this for months.
It all started last week when they put up a big sign in the main hallway saying "Coming of Age Ceremony - This Friday!" I couldn't wait. This was going to be the day when we got to dress up all fancy and walk across the stage in front of our parents and teachers. It's kind of like a mini graduation ceremony to celebrate us becoming young adults.
My mom took me shopping for a new outfit to wear. We went to the mall and I tried on slacks, button-down shirts, blazers, you name it. I wanted to look my absolute best. After tryin
g on what felt like a million different outfits, I finally decided on a crisp white dress shirt, a sharp navy blue blazer, and a pair of black dress pants. I even got some new dress shoes that made me look so grown up.
The night before, I could hardly sleep I was so excited and nervous. I laid out my outfit perfectly so it would look great in the morning. I crimped my hair and spent extra time on my skincare routine so my face would be glowing. I wanted to be picture perfect!
When I got to school in the morning, you could just feel the buzz of excitement in the air. Students were running around making sure their clothes looked perfect and teachers were decorating the auditorium stage. We had scheduled rehearsals throughout the week to practice lining up, walking across the stage, and shaking hands with the principal.
Finally, it was time for the ceremony to begin at 6pm. My parents showed up an hour early to get good seats. I had to be there even earlier to line up backstage with the other students. We were going in alphabetical order by last name, so I was towards the middle.
As we were all lined up, the teachers came around doing final checks, straightening ties and brushing off shoulders. You could tell some people's parents had really gone all out - the guys were in full suits and ties and the girls had on beautiful dresses and had their hair and makeup completely done up. I felt a little underdressed compared to them if I'm being honest.
At exactly 6pm, the auditorium lights dimmed and the ceremony began. The principal came out on stage and gave a welcome speech about what an important milestone this was and how we were "blossoming into young adults right before their eyes." She talked about all the opportunities and possibilities ahead of us. Then it was time for us to start coming out.
The first few names were called and those students crossed the stage to shouts and cheers from the audience. Cameras were flashing everywhere. I'll admit I was starting to get a little nervous. What if I tripped crossing the stage? Or worse, what if I actually fell?? How embarrassing would that be?
But then it was my turn. "John Smith," the voice over the loudspeaker called out. I took a deep breath and walked out onto the stage, putting one foot in front of the other like we had practiced. As I came into view of the audience, I instantly spotted my parents giving me the biggest smiles and waving excitedly. Seeing them made me feel so proud in that moment.
I shook the principal's hand and headed off to the other side of the stage where we were being lined up again to exit. My parents absolutely beamed at me as I walked by. I could see my dad's eyes getting a little misty. I couldn't help but smile back at them as big as I possibly could. This truly did feel like such a symbolic moment.
After everyone had crossed the stage, the principal gave another speech wishing us well as we "spread our wings and pursue our dreams." She encouraged us to make the most of our remaining high school years. Then it was done! We had all officially "come of age."
There was another reception area set up in the cafeteria after where we could all mingle and take photos. My parents immediately found me and enveloped me in the biggest hugs saying how grown up I looked and how proud they were of me. We took about a million pho
tos to document the occasion.
Other families were doing the same, proudly showing off their newly minted "adults" decked out in their finery. You could really feel the joyful atmosphere. Teachers were walking around congratulating everyone.
After staying for the reception a while, my parents said we should go out for a celebratory dinner, just the three of us. We ended up going to one of the nicest restaurants in town, the kind of place we really only get dressed up to go to on really special occasions.
I spent the whole dinner just sort of basking in the proud smiles from my parents. They couldn't stop telling me how quickly I was growing up and reminiscing about when I was just a little kid. I had to admit, part of me felt just a tiny bit self-conscious at all the sudden "adulting" as I like to call it. But the other part of me felt so mature and sophisticated getting to go to this fancy restaurant and being celebrated like this. It was one of those weird transitional moments where you get a glimpse of your future self.
