My Big English Test Adventure
Hi there! My name is Lily and I'm 10 years old. I just had the craziest experience taking a really important English exam at a university called Shaoyang University. Let me tell you all about my big adventure!
A few months ago, my mom and dad told me I would be taking the Continuing Education Degree English Exam. At first I was like "An English exam? At a university? But I'm just a kid!" My parents explained that even though I'm still in primary school, this was a special exam that kids my age could take if their English was really good. They said passing it would give me a certificate to show I'm an excellent English student.
I was excited but also a little nervous. English is my favorite subject in school but I had never taken such a big, important test before. My parents hired an English tutor named Miss Zhang to help me prepare. Miss Zhang was really nice and made studying fun by playing games and singing songs in English with me.
Finally, the big day arrived! I remember waking up super early and eating a huge breakfast to get my energy up. My dad drove me to Shaoyang University which is this gigantic campus with tons of big buildings. We found the exam hall which was this humongous room full of individual desks. There were kids of all ages there, from little ones in kindergarten all the way up to teenagers!
The exam supervisor was a serious-looking lady who made sure we all knew the rules. No cheating, no talking, all that strict stuff. I was feeling pretty nervous by that point looking around at all the other students. But then I took a few deep breaths like Miss Zhang taught me and tried to relax.
The first part of the exam was listening comprehension. We had to listen to recordings of
people speaking English and answer questions about what they said. That was actually kind of fun since it was just like the games Miss Zhang and I would play. The hardest parts were when they spoke really fast or used words I didn't know.
After the listening part, we moved on to reading comprehension. This involved reading English passages and answering questions about the main ideas, details, vocabulary, and making inferences. I felt pretty confident since I love reading English storybooks. Although some of the passages were on subjects I didn't know much about like science and history.
We then had a break for lunch which was a huge relief. I was already getting a little tired of all that reading and listening intently. The cafeteria had yummy noodles and dumplings though which re-energized me.
The afternoon began with the writing section which I was nervous about. We had to write an essay in English responding to a prompt. The prompt asked us to describe our favorite book and explain why we liked it. I chose to write about Harry Potter which made it easier since I know those stories inside and out! Hopefully my essay made sense and had correct
grammar.
The very last part was speaking, which meant having a conversation in English with an examiner. One-on-one speaking always makes me anxious, but the examiner was really nice. She asked me questions about my hobbies, family, and goals which let me just chat casually like with a friend.
After what felt like an eternity, the marathon exam day finally ended! I was absolutely exhausted but also felt proud for pushing through and doing my best. Miss Zhang always told me "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Taking this big English exam was definitely a huge step in my journey to become fluent.
A few weeks later, I got my results in the I PASSED! I got a qualifying score and my Continuing Education Degree English certificate. My parents were overjoyed and took me out for my favorite dumplings to celebrate. They told me they were so impressed by my determination and hard work.
sort something out
Even though it was really challenging and stressful at times, I'm ultimately glad I took the Continuing Education Degree English Exam. It helped me see how far my English skills have progressed and showed me that I can take on any big challenge as long as I prepare diligently. Who knows, maybe I'll become an English teacher myself one day and help other kids get ready for important exams!
I hope you enjoyed hearing about my crazy exam adventure. Learn from my experience - study hard, stay calm under pressure, and always believe in yourself! You've got this!
