My Views on Hustle Culture and Laying Flat
Hi there! My name is Emma and I'm in 5th grade. Today I wanted to share my thoughts on two ideas that seem to be really popular lately - hustle culture and laying flat. These are pretty big concepts, but I'll do my best to explain them from my perspective as a 10-year-old kid.
Hustle culture is this idea that you need to be working super duper hard all the time to be successful. People who follow hustle culture believe you should have multiple jobs or side hustles, barely sleep, and basically live to work. There's this mindset that if you aren't grinding and hustling 24/7, you're just being lazy and won't accomplish anything meaningful.
On the other hand, laying flat refers to people who have decided to opt out of that crazy work lifestyle. People who "lay flat" consciously choose to do the bare minimum at their jobs, avoid taking on extra responsibilities, and just sort of coast through life without stressing themselves out over career ambitions or making tons of money.
From what I can tell, hustle culture seems to be more popular with adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s. Lots of entrepreneurs, influencers, and business people on social media are really into promoting that nonstop work ethic. Meanwhile, the laying flat philosophy seems to be catching on more with younger people who feel disillusioned with the prospect of killing themselves at work for little payoff.
Personally, I can kind of see pros and cons to both mindsets. On one hand, I do believe it's important to work hard in school and have a good work ethic. My parents didn't raise me to be lazy! I admire people who are passionate about their goals and pour tons of effort into pursuing their dreams, even if it means making sacrifices.
But at the same time, I'm just a kid! The idea of having to dive into multiple jobs or side g
igs on top of school already sounds incredibly stressful to me. I value having time to just relax, play outside, spend time with friends and family, and pursue hobbies I enjoy. The thought of missing out on enjoying my childhood because I'm too busy grinding away doesn't seem fun at all.
From my perspective as a 10-year-old, I don't think it's healthy or necessary to fully embrace either hustle culture or laying flat to an extreme. A big part of being a kid is figuring out how to find balance and moderation in life. Sure, I need to work hard on my schoolwork and chores without slacking off. But I also need ample time to recharge, be creative, and just be a carefree kid too.
I think when I'm an adult, My goal will be to find a happy medium. I'll strive to have a successful career that I'm passionate about, but not at the expense of my mental health or personal life. Making enough money to life comfortably will be important, but I don't want to obsess over chasing wealth while forgetting to actually enjoy my life along the way. Basically, I'll work hard, but also make sure to lay flat and rest when I need it.
Moderation seems key to me. I don't want to blindly adopt societal pressures to be a workaholic machine constantly in hustle mode. But I'll also be careful not to become a complete couch potato who lays flat so much that I miss out on fulfilling my potential. I'm just gonna try to stay balanced, you know?
Those are just my thoughts though! I'm sure plenty of other kids (and adults) might look at hustle culture and laying flat differently. Either way, I hope people figure out what works best for them and aren't afraid to blaze their own path in life. Thanks for reading my essay!

Too Much Homework? Lying Flat or Pushing Forward?
Hi there! My name is Amy and I'm a 4th grader at Sunny Hills Elementary School. Today I want to share my thoughts on this "lying flat" thing that some kids are talking about these days. It's kind of the opposite of being a "try-hard" or an "extra credit kid" like me.
See, I really love learning new things and doing well in school. My teachers are always t
elling me what a great job I'm doing and how I'm such a hard worker. I guess you could call me a bit of an overachiever! Every night after school, I spend a few hours doing my homework, studying for tests, and working on special projects. Sometimes I even do extra credit assignments, just for fun. I know, I know - most kids probably think I'm totally lame and boring. But I really enjoy challenging myself and pushing my brain to its limits.
sort out of    A lot of my classmates feel differently though. They constantly complain about having too much homework and how school is "too hard" for them. I hear them whining in the hallways about their evil math teacher who assigns 30 problems every night (30 is really not that much, in my opinion!) or about that super long book report that's due next month. Some kids have even started skipping assignments or not studying for tests at all - they just gave up completely. That's what they call "lying flat," I think.
