Reading is the Best! Online or Paper Books?
Reading is one of my favorite things to do! I love getting lost in a good story and using my imagination to picture everything happening. My parents say reading is really important for learning new things too. But there's one big question I've been thinking about a lot lately: is it better to read online ebooks and websites or physical paper books? I've tried both and they're quite different experiences. Let me tell you about some of the pros and cons I've noticed.
With online reading, the biggest advantage is that it's just so convenient! I can read ebooks and articles anytime, anywhere on my tablet or parents' phone. All I need is that digital device and the internet. Physical books are nice, but they're a hassle to lug around ev
erywhere. If I'm reading a long novel, that book gets pretty heavy in my backpack! Online stuff like short stories and magazines are easy to quickly pull up on a screen.
Another great thing about online reading is the multimedia capabilities. When I'm reading certain websites or ebooks, there are videos, audio clips, interactive graphics and animations that make the content more engaging and fun. An example is when I was reading about the solar system online - I could see the planets move and orbit the sun in this really cool animation. That's not something a flat book page can do!
Additionally, online reading means I have access to way more reading material than I could ever have in physical form. Our local library has lots of great books, but even their collection can't compare to the millions of ebooks, articles, and websites out there online. If I hear about an interesting book, I can likely find it and start reading it right away with just a few taps, rather than having to wait to go to the library or bookstore.
However, reading on paper has some major advantages too. For one, I simply find it a more pleasurable and relaxing experience overall. Curling up with an actual book and feeli
ng those paper pages - there's just something special about it that a screen can't replicate. Reading physical books seems easier on my eyes too after lots of progressive reading because there's no harsh screen glare or brightness.
I also feel more "focused" in a way when reading a physical book, with fewer distractions pulling me away. With online reading, I'm always tempted to quickly switch over to YouTube or play a game with just a swipe. Bingeing fun videos can make it harder for me to stick with reading for long periods. A standalone paper book has my full attention.
Plus, I love being able to build my own "collection" of physical books on my bookshelf at home. Walking by and flipping through those familiar books gives me a warm, nostalgic feeling. It would just seem weird to have a virtual "bookshelf" of ebook covers displayed on a screen. Seeing those colorful book spines also motivates me to keep reading more.
Another thing is that reading on paper can provide a richer, more immersive experience for some types of books. Picture books and graphic novels in particular are not quite the same online because of how the illustrations look on paper versus a screen. I have a few tr
easured comic books and picture books that are extra vibrant, large, and beautiful in physical form.
So those are some of the biggest pros and cons I've found so far! Overall, I think both online reading and reading physical books have important strengths. Maybe the very best thing is to take advantage of both formats depending on the situation. If I'm reading for learning or researching a topic, I'll often start online to access the multimedia resources and easily find different sources. But if it's an exciting novel or book of beautiful illustrations, I may check out the paper version from the library because I'll savour that more immersive reading experience.
No matter what format I'm using though, reading itself is awesome and so important! I'm really glad my parents got me into the habit from an early age. Reading exercises my brain and imagination while teaching me new vocabulary and facts about the world. It allows me to go on adventures and see through other characters' eyes, which builds empathy. Plus, being a strong reader helps me a ton with other school subjects like writing, science, and s
ocial studies. I truly believe reading in any form - whether a website, ebook or good old paper book - is one of the most valuable skills I can develop. I'm just getting started on my reading journey and I can't wait to discover more amazing books in the years ahead!
