But let me explain why I think spending too much time on screens is a dangerous addiction that we all need to be aware of.
First of all, let's talk about how much time I actually spend on my devices. I'm sure my pare
nts would say it's way too much, but in my opinion, it's not that bad. I usually wake up and check my phone for messages from my friends, then I play a few games on my tablet while eating breakfast. At school, I try to pay attention in class (I swear!), but during recess, I'm usually on my phone again, scrolling through Instagram or watching funny videos on TikTok.
After school, I'll come home, do my homework (reluctantly), and then spend the rest of the evening gaming on my console or watching shows on Netflix. Before bed, I'll chat with my friends on WhatsApp or Snapchat for a couple of hours, and then I'll fall asleep with my phone in my hand. See? Not that bad, right?
Wrong! When I really think about it, I realize that I'm spending almost all of my waking hours staring at a screen. And that's not even counting the time I spend on my laptop for school projects or the hours I waste mindlessly surfing the internet. It's honestly kind of scary how much time I waste on these devices, and I'm starting to see the negative effects it's having on my life.
For one thing, my eyesight is getting worse. I used to have perfect 20/20 vision, but now I'm squinting all the time, and my eyes feel strained and tired. My mom keeps nagging me to take breaks from the screens, but I just can't seem to tear myself away.
Another problem is that I'm not getting enough physical activity. I used to love playing outside, riding my bike, and running around with my friends. But now, I'd much rather stay inside and play video games or watch movies. I've gained a lot of weight, and I get out of breath really easily. My gym teacher is always yelling at me to pick up the pace during our fitness tests.
But the worst part is how my addiction to screens is affecting my relationships with my family and friends. I'll be hanging out with my best friend, but instead of paying attention to her, I'll be constantly checking my phone for notifications or watching funny videos. My parents are always telling me to put my devices away during family time, but I just can't seem to disconnect.
And let's not even talk about how my grades are suffering because I'm constantly distract
ed by my devices. I'll be trying to do my homework, but then I'll get a notification from a game or a message from a friend, and before I know it, I've wasted hours procrastinating.
I know this all sounds really bad, but I honestly don't know how to break this addiction. Whenever I try to cut back on my screen time, I get really anxious and restless. I start feeling like I'm missing out on everything happening online, and I get major FOMO (fear of missing out). It's like my devices are controlling me, instead of the other way around.
But I know I need to make a change, for my health and wellbeing. I've tried setting timers and limits on my devices, but I always find a way to get around them. Maybe I need to go cold turkey and just completely unplug for a while. Or maybe I need to find some new hobbies and activities to replace my screen time, like reading books, playing sports, or learning a musical instrument.
Whatever the solution is, I know I need to do something soon before my addiction to screens ruins my life completely. I don't want to end up as a lazy, unhealthy, socially-awkward adult who can't function without a device in my hand. I want to be able to live in th
e real world, connect with people face-to-face, and experience all the amazing things life has to offer beyond a screen.
