A Vacation Without Gadgets? Yes, Please!
Have you ever gone on a trip and spent more time staring at a screen than actually enjoying the places you visited? I know I have, and it's such a bummer! That's why I think we all need to take a break from our electronic devices during vacations.
My parents are always nagging me about being on my tablet or phone too much. "Clara, get off that thing and go play outside!" my mom says at least a hundred times a day. I try to explain to her that I need my devices to stay connected with my friends and watch videos, but she just doesn't get it. She's from the olden days when kids played outside until the streetlights came on.
This summer, my parents decided to finally put their foot down about my excessive screen time. They announced that we were going on a camping trip in the woods, and get this - no phones, tablets, gaming systems or anything else electronic were allowed! I thought I was going to die from boredom.
At first, I desperately tried to bargain with them to change the rules. "But how will I listen to music or read ebooks?" I pleaded. Mom just smiled and said, "You'll have to use that beautiful imagination of yours for entertainment."
I sulked the whole way there, convinced it was going to be the worst vacation ever. When we arrived at the campsite though, something started to change in me. The fresh pine-scented air, the cheerful bubbling of the nearby stream, and the warm sunshine peeking through the trees made me feel happy in a way no electronic device ever could.
After we set up our tent, Dad suggested going on a hike to explore the area. Normally I would have protested and begged to just veg out on a device instead. This time though, I was actually eager to go. Mom packed some snacks and we hit the trail, leaving those addi
ctive little screens behind in our tent.
The hike was like being in a real-life movie! We saw woodpeckers darting among the tree trunks, curious chipmunks scampering across the path, and velvet-green moss covering fallen logs. At one point, we stopped to snack and listen to the melodic trilling of birds. "Can you hear that?" Dad asked in a hushed voice. "That's a Swainson's thrush singing its enchanting song." We all fell silent, completely captivated by the beautiful sound of nature.
In the evenings back at our campsite, we didn't even think about missing our devices. Dad built a toasty campfire and we took turns roasting gooey marshmallows. We told silly stories, played charades, and sang campy old songs, laughing until our bellies ached. On our last night, we lay on our backs, gazing up at the brilliant stars sparkling against the velvety black sky. I've never felt so peaceful and present in my life.
All too soon, it was time to pack up and head home. As we drove away, I felt a little sad to be leaving that special place where we experienced real human connection, adventure,
and the beauty of the great outdoors. I didn't even ask Mom to charge up my tablet for the drive like I normally would have.
That camping trip taught me that while electronic devices can be entertaining, they're also keeping me from fully experiencing the wonders of the world around me. They prevent me from truly connecting face-to-face with the people I love most. They dull my creativity and imagination. And perhaps worst of all, they keep me cooped up inside instead of running, jumping, and soaking up fresh air and sunshine.

Now when I'm home, I still use my devices, but in much smaller doses. More of my free time is spent outdoors riding bikes, climbing trees, and playing make-believe games with my neighborhood friends. When my parents told me this summer that we're going camping again - this time for an entire week with no devices allowed - I was overjoyed!
So I say, let's all plan a nice long vacation away from the virtual world. It will be a chance to recharge in the great outdoors, bond with our loved ones, and make beautiful memories. Who's with me? Just don't forget to put away those phones first!
