The Good and Bad Things About Reading on Screens
Hi there! My name is Tommy and I'm in 5th grade. Today I want to talk to you about reading books and stuff on digital devices like tablets, phones and computers instead of reading from paper books. There are some really good things about digital reading, but also some not so good things. Let me tell you all about it!
The Awesome Benefits of Digital Reading
One of the biggest awesome benefits of reading on a screen is that you can have SO MANY books right at your fingertips! With a regular paper book, you just have that one story. But on a device, you can have a million kazillion books loaded up and ready to go. That's really cool if you're a super fast reader like me who blazes through books.
Another brilliant benefit is that digital books are easier to read than paper books in lots of situations. If you're reading in bed at night, you can make the text bright and easy to see without having to keep a light on that might bother your parents. Or if you're outside on a really sunny day, you can crank up the brightness so the words don't get washed out by the sun's rays.
Digital books also have awesome additional features that aren't possible with paper books. Some of them have built-in dictionaries so if you don't know what a word means, you can just tap on it and get the definition right there. Or for long boring books, some devices can even read the text out loud to you in different fun voices if your eyes get tired from reading. Plus there are often cool animations, videos and games to go along with the stories. It's like the books come alive!
And probably the best benefit of all is that reading from a screen is much much better for the environment than reading paper books. We all learn in school how important it is to save trees and not waste paper and stuff. Digital books mean zero trees get cut down and zero ink gets used up. It's a total win for Mother Nature!
The Not So Great Downsides
As awesome as digital reading is, there are also some real downsides to be aware of. One of the biggest problems is that reading on a screen can be really hard on your eyes, especially if you're looking at that glowing screen for a long time without taking breaks. Your eyes can get really strained and tired, and sometimes you might even get headaches. That's no fun at all!
Another not so great thing is that it's very easy to get distracted when reading on a digital device. You might be trying to read your book, but then you get a text message or an alert pops up about a new video or something. Before you know it, you're no longer reading and you're just zoning out playing games! With paper books, there are way fewer distractions around.
Reading on a device also makes it easier than ever to cheat on things like reading assignments from your teacher. If you don't feel like reading the book yourself, you could just try searching online for summaries of what happens instead of doing the work yourself.
That's really not a good habit to start!
And lastly, one of the downsides I don't like about digital books is that they can be a lot more expensive than regular books, especially for new releases. Publishers charge a lot because you're not actually owning a physical copy. If your device breaks or you want to switch services, you could lose access to all your books unless you pay more money again.
The Final Verdict
So those are some of the major pros and cons when it comes to reading on a screen versus reading a physical book. From being able to have millions of stories at hand to all the awesome features to helping the planet, digital reading is incredibly convenient and cool. But we also have to be careful about eye strain, getting distracted, cheating, and dealing with higher prices.
Personally, I think the best solution is to do a little bit of both screen reading and book reading. That way you get the benefits of digital while still experiencing the joys of a fresh n
ew paper book. Whatever you prefer, just make sure to set aside plenty of daily reading time! Reading really is fundamental, no matter if it's on a device or out of a book.
Alright, that's all I've got to say on this topic for now. Thank you so much for reading my essay! Let me know if you have any other questions.
