扫尘 sweeping the dust。“dust” is homophonic同音的,谐音 with “chen”(尘)in chinese, which means old and past. in this way, “sweeping the dust” before the spring festival means a thorough cleaning of houses to sweep away bad luck in the past year. this custom shows a good wish of putting away old things to welcome a new life. in a word, just before the spring festival comes, every household will give a thorough cleaning to bid farewell to the old year and usher in the new.

the laba rice porridge festival腊八粥on the 8th day of the 12th lunar month, many families make laba porridge, a delicious kind of porridge made with glutinous rice, millet, seeds of jobs tears, jujube berries, lotus seeds, beans, longan and gingko.

lucky money: it is the money given to kids from their parents and grandparents as new year gift. the money is believed to bring good luck, ward off避开挡住monsters怪物or unfortunate; hence因此 the name// lucky money. parents and grandparents first put money in small, especially made red envelope and give to their kids after the new years feast. it is one of the kids’favorite things in spring festival.
on new year’s day, for breakfast, people in northern china will eat jiaozi, or dumplings, southern chinese eat niangao on this occasion. in addition, people exchange greetings, gifts and chat leisurely.
