The Spring Festival (春节) is the Chinese New Year’s Day. It comes from January or February. This year it is on February 1st. People will have a 7-day vacation (假期). So all of the Chinese like this festival. Before it come people are busy cleaning the house and tidying the rooms. On the eve of Spring Festival (除夕), the family come home from other places. They get together and have a big dinner. They eat dumplings (饺子) and some other nice food in their homes. Usually all the family members help make those dumplings together at home. Making
dumplings together has a long history. Some families have a party at night. They sing, dance and have a good time. The night is relaxing and fun.
The Chinese word for Ox (牛) is pronounced (读音) “Niu”. It sounds like “new” in English. So we say “Happy Niu Year” last Spring Festival. We don’t say “Happy Niu Year” to them this year. As we know, it’s time to say goodbye to the Year of the Ox and welcome the Year of the Tiger (虎).

Chinese people call the Spring Festival “Nian”. But do you know that Nian was once the name of a monster(怪物)?
A long time ago, the monster Nian lived in the mountains. It ate animals. But in winter, it could not find food. So it came to villages and ate a lot of people.
