My Family Trip to Hainan - The Tropical Paradise
This past winter break, my parents surprised me and my little brother with a trip to Hainan province. I had heard it was like a tropical paradise, but I didn't really know what to expect. Well, let me tell you - Hainan is amazing! It's got beautiful beaches, cool cultural sites, yummy food, and so much more. I'm going to tell you all about the awesome places we visited.
Our first stop was Sanya, which is known as the "Oriental Hawaii." We stayed at this really fancy beach resort right on Yalong Bay. The beach was incredible - the sand was perfect and the water was so clear and warm. We spent a whole day just hanging out, swimming, and building sandcastles. My little brother kept trying to bury me in the sand! That night, we went t
o the resort's buffet and I tried tons of new tropical fruits like longans, lychees, and mangosteens. Yum!
The next day, we went to Nanwan Monkey Island. This little island is covered in trees and bushes, and it's home to over 2,000 macaque monkeys that just roam around freely. It was so cool to see them up close - some were swinging through the trees, others were grooming each other or playing. One even stole my mom's bag of snacks! We had to be careful though because the monkeys can get aggressive if they think you have food.
After the monkey island, we drove up into the mountains to see the Nanshan Buddhism Cultural Zone. It's this massive park area with tons of Buddhist temples, statues, and shrines. The centerpiece is the gigantic 108 meter tall Guanyin statue on the top of the mountain. We had to take a cable car partway up, then climb what felt like a million stairs to reach the top viewing area. But it was totally worth it for the incredible views! All the temples were gorgeous too, decorated with bright colors and detailed carvings.
On our fourth day, we visited Yalong Bay National Resort District. This place had so man
y fun activities! We went to an aquarium and saw sharks, rays, and all kinds of tropical fish. Then we hit up a couple water parks - one had awesome waterslides and a lazy river, the other had this crazy river rapids ride that totally soaked us. We also checked out some gardens full of colorful flowers and topiary sculptures shaped like animals. That evening, we caught an amazing performance with dancers, acrobats, and motorcyclists doing crazy stunts inside a globe!
The next stop on our Hainan adventure was Wuzhi Mountain in the center of the island. We hiked up through forests of bamboo to reach some old Taoist temples perched high up on the mountainside. The hike was pretty tough, especially with the crazy humidity, but the scenery made it worth it. The temples were built right into the mountainside, with pavilions and shrines nestled in caves and on cliffs. It felt like something out of a kung fu movie!
After sweating it out in the mountains, we headed for some relaxation time on the East Coast beaches. Our driver took us to Riyuewan, which are these cool rock formations right on the beach that look like mushroom caps. We climbed all over them and took about a mill
ion pictures. Nearby was a place called Shimei Bay that had crystal clear water for snorkeling. I saw so many tropical fish and coral - it was like being in a giant aquarium!
On our final day in Hainan, we explored Haikou, which is the capital city located in the north. We walked through the Old Street area, which had a bunch of shops and restaurants set up in these historic buildings with pretty tile roofs. I tried so many delicious Hainanese snacks, like Wenchang chicken and husband cake (don't ask me why it's called that!). We also toured the Haikou Volcanic Cluster Park, which had cool lava formations and an extinct volcanic crater.
After a week in Hainan, I was so sad to leave! This tropical paradise has everything - gorgeous beaches, amazing natural scenery, cool cultural stuff, and delicious food. I can't wait to go back someday. If you ever get a chance to visit Hainan, you have to go! Just watch out for those
