THIS MONTH WE CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY
Born on September 8, 1954, in Tylertown, Mississippi, Ruby Bridges was 6 when she became the first African-American child to integrate a white Southern elementary school, having
to be escorted to class by her mother and U.S. marshals due to violent mobs. Bridges' bravery paved the way for continued Civil Rights action and she's shared her story with future  generations in educational forums. To read more about Ruby and her story go to www.biography/people/ruby-bridges
"My message is really that racism has no place in the hearts and minds of our children."
(Ruby Bridges)
In October, 2006, the Alameda Unified School District dedicated a new elementary school to
Ruby Bridges, and issued a proclamation in her honor.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR…
GOOD THINGS COMING IN MARCH
For more than a year, the teens in Youth Ministry have taken responsibility for the 11:30 Mass on the first Sunday each month, providing music, greeters and liturgical ministers.  Parishioners of all ages have com-mented favorably on their presence and service.  I am very happy to announce that they are expanding their commitment, and starting in March the 11:30 Mass every Sunday will be a Youth Mass.  The Youth Group’s musicians will provide the music, and teens and adults will share roles as lectors, Eucharistic ministers and greeters, for the glory of God and at the service of all our St. Joseph family, regardless of age.  The youth are the future of our Church, and their active involvement bodes well for all of us.  In the words of Pope Francis as he addressed the youth present at last year’s Palm Sunday Mass:  “You have an important part in the celebration of faith! You bring us the joy of faith and you tell us that we must live the faith with a young heart, always: a young heart, even at the age of seventy or eighty… With Christ, the heart never grows old!”
(Homily, 24 March 2013)We are grateful to our Youth Ministry Coordinator Adam Chaffey and his dedicated team of youth and adult volunteers for making this possible.
Also starting in March is the sacred season of Lent.  More information on our parish schedule will follo
w next week, but in the meantime I am delighted to share that Fr. David Tobin will lead a Parish Mission for us, three days of spiritual renewal offered each morning and repeated that evening.  He will speak at all the Masses on March 15 and 16, and the Mission will take place the following Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  The
following week starts three consecutive Thursday nights of spiritual enrichment through an introduction to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius: “Come! Taste and See the Goodness of God.”  Mark your calendars.
As we renew our spiritual lives we can also renew our spirits with a parish celebration of the feasts of St.  Patrick and St. Joseph, with a dinner dance on March 22.  Join the festivities.
More information can be found on our website, and will be emailed weekly in our “Midweek Bulletin.”  If you arenotyetreceivingournewelectronicnewsletter,**************************************“Midweek Bulletin” in the subject line, or print your email on the sign-up form at the front entrance of the basilica.
God bless you!

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT THIS MONDAY EVENING
GETTING READY FOR LENT
Join us this Monday (February 24) for Eucharistic exposition and benediction, 7:00 to 8:30pm.  Come for a few moments of prayer and contemplation, or stay the entire time.  Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is also
offered the first Friday of each month from 8:30 - noon.
Lent
A Sense of the Season
The word Lent means springtime. This word comes from the same root as
lengthen. Daytime lengthens during Lent. The northern hemisphere turns toward
the sun, the source of life, and winter turns into spring. In Hebrew, the word for repentance is the same as the word that means to turn, like the turning of the earth to the sun, like the turning of the soil before planting.
“Even now, says the Lord, turn to me.” (Joel 2:12) The word sin means separation. We are called to turn from our separate selves, from our sin, to come together in community. Self-denial is the way we express our repentance. In the lengthening brightness from Ash Wednesday until Holy Thursday afternoon, our holy Lent, we turn to God as our source of life.
Self-denial is threefold, advises Matthew’s gospel. We pray: “Go to your room, close your door, and pray to your Father in private.” We fast: “No one must see you are fasting but your  Father.” We give alms: “Keep your deeds of mercy secret, and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.” Through the Lenten exercise of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we spring-clean our lives, sharpen our senses, put tomorrow in its place and treasure the day at hand.
Why are there forty days in Lent? It took forty days for sinfulness to drown in the flood before a new creation could inherit the earth. It took forty years for the generation of slaves to die before the freeborn could enter the promised land. For forty days Moses and Elijah and Jesus fasted and prayed to prepare themselves for a life’s work.
At the beginning of Lent the bishop calls out the names of the catechumens who seek to be baptized at Easter. Their names are written in the book of the elect, the chosen. God has chosen them, and they have chosen to turn to God. Lent is the forty days before the baptism of the  catechumens. The already baptized can share the excitement and the struggles of the elect and  rediscover the meaning of baptism in their own lives. During the forty days, both catechumens and the faithful journey together to the holy font.
We keep Lent together. We put aside our business-as-usual to support each other in prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We turn to God to enlighten us and purify us throughout the lengthening brightness of our holy season of Lent.  “For now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation!” Copyright © 1997, Archdiocese of Chicago. Liturgy Training Publications, 1800 North Hermitage Avenue, Chicago IL 60622-1101; 1800-933-1800. Text by Peter Mazar. ST. JOSEPH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL UPDATE
The Parish Staff, along with students and faculty from the elementary school, were privileged to watch a performance this past week by Chinese Acrobats visiting the United States.  The Acrobats are from
Mainland China. They are here in the western United States for three
months performing mainly for school assemblies.  Our PTG (Parent group) sets aside money from their budget each year for student enrichment and the Chinese Acrobats are just one of the assemblies they have arranged for this school year.  We also had a children's book  author visit last month and will have the Star Lab on the 12th and 13th of March, also paid for by our PTG.

YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS
Have you every thought about going on a Mission Trip? One of our very own high school parishioners took her own initiative last year to fundraise, and go on a Mission Trip to South America last Summer. This amaz-ing young lady, Elena Radding, will be coming to share her experiences with the youth group this Sunday. If you’re a high school teen this is definitely a session to come to. We’ll be in the Parish Center (on Lafayette St.) form 12:45pm-2:15pm. If you’ve never been you’re most welcome to come for the first time.
I’m hoping that this session will spark some interest, and will lead Deacon Jimmy and myself to coordi
nate a Mission Trip next year for high school teens. Our faith should be lived out, and a Mission Trip is a fantastic way to do this.
Also, in case you haven’t heard, St. Joseph Basilica is going to have a WEEKLY YOUTH MASS at the 11:30 time. This will start on the first Sunday of Lent, March 9. Keep a look out in the bulletin over the next few weeks to find out what amazing things we’ll see.
Your brother in Christ,
Adam Chaffey, Youth Minister
