My Favorite Holiday
Holidays are the best! They're the times when we get to take a break from school, stay up late, and do fun things with our families. While I enjoy all holidays, my absolute favorite has to be Spring Festival, which is also known as Chinese New Year. It's a time filled with exciting traditions, delicious food, and quality time spent with loved ones.
The lead-up to Spring Festival is always a flurry of activity. At school, we learn about the history and customs associated with this important celebration. We make intricate paper cut-outs with auspicious symbols like fu (fortune) and decorate our classrooms with them. We also practice writing couplets – those big red banners with poetic lines that get hung on doorways. My mom helps me practice my calligraphy at home so my couplets look neat and t
idy.
A week or two before the big day, my grandparents come to stay with us. I love having them around! Grandma starts cooking up a storm, preparing all sorts of tasty dishes like dumplings, noodles, and her famous braised pork belly. The mouthwatering smells waft through our apartment, making my stomach growl. Grandpa takes me to the markets to stock up on fresh produce and ingredients for our reunion dinner feast.
On New Year's Eve, the real fun begins! After a thorough house cleaning (I help by tidying my room), we decorate our home with red lanterns, upside-down fu symbols for good luck, and a bright tangerine tree. In the evening, we gather around the table for our annual hot pot dinner. We go around the table saying what we're grateful for from the past year. I'm always thankful for my loving family, my health, and the chance to learn new things at school.
Once our bellies are full, it's time to stay up late! We watch the amazing CCTV Spring Festival Gala – a huge variety show filled with songs, dances, comedy sketches, and more.
My favorite parts are the crosstalk (xiangsheng) acts and the amazing acrobatic performances. I try my best to stay awake until midnight when we'll set off firecrackers and fireworks to ring in the new year. The loud bangs are supposed to scare away any lingering evil spirits. I just think they're really cool!
spring street是什么意思 New Year's Day is filled with visiting relatives and friends. We put on our new clothes (I get new outfits and shoes every year), eat candies and snacks, and receive lucky red envelopes filled with cash from the married adults. My cousins and I compare how much money we got and make plans for what we'll buy with it. One year, I saved up to get a new bike!
Over the next few days, we continue feasting on all the amazing dishes my grandma prepared. We'll watch more television specials and movies together. Sometimes, we'll go to temple fairs where we can see traditional performances, play carnival games, and eat lots of tasty street food. I always look forward to the dragon dances – they're so vibrant and energetic!
Before we know it, the Spring Festival holiday draws to a close. We have to say goodbye to my grandparents as they head back to their hometown. I'm sad to see them go, but I know they'll be back again next year. School resumes, but we get to keep celebrating a bit longer with classroom parties. We share the snacks and treats we got, and tell stories about how we spent our vacations.
Spring Festival is truly the most wonderful time of the year. It's a chance to bond with family, learn about our rich cultural heritage, and make wonderful memories. I hope I can keep enjoying this special holiday for many, many years to come! Maybe one day, I'll get to host the big reunion dinner myself. Now that would be a dream come true.

Here's a sample essay in English on a possible prompt for a 5th grade mid-term test in the PEP edition textbook. The essay is written from the perspective of a 5th grader and is approximately 2000 words long.
Prompt: Write a story about a time when you helped someone in need.
The Day I Became a Hero
It was a sunny Saturday morning, and I was feeling pretty bored. All my friends were out of town with their families, and I had nothing planned for the day. I thought about playing video games or watching TV, but I had already done that a lot during the week. I needed something new and exciting to do.
That's when I remembered that my Mom had asked me to walk our dog, Buddy, earlier. I hadn't done it yet because, to be honest, I wasn't really in the mood. But since I had nothing better to do, I figured I might as well get it over with.
