Good morning,everybody.Look at this picture.It’s a wonderful flower in the Chinese colorful fashion scene.Do you know what’s that?Yes,Chinese cheongsam[ˌtʃɔŋˈsɑm],we can also call it Qipao.Today let’s move into the word of Qipao,to know more about it.
cheongsamLET’S start form the first part—historical origin.
Most of the early Qipao were made of silk, and embroidered [ɪm'brɔɪdə(r)] with thick laces trimmed [trimd] at the collar, sleeves and edges. The dress empresses of past dynasties [ˈdainəstiz] wore them. Their style of dress was noted as the highest of standards for Chinese women.
In the early 17th century in North China, Nurhachi, set up the Eight
Banner System. Later he led his troops into Beijing and overthrew the Ming Dynasty [ˈdaɪnəsti] .After years, a collarless tube-shaped gown was well developed, which was worn by both genders. This is the early version of the Qipao. It became kind of popular among the royal palace of the Qing Dynasty to show the Manchu[ˈmæntʃu: ] nobility.
  In the early Republic of China, the Qipao began to be popular again. The body became shortened. The waist was narrowed[ˈnærəud]. Later there was a new change that style of collar was highlighted to be fashionable to show feminine [ˈfɛmənɪn] appearance.
  1930s and 1940s saw the Qipao in its peak fashion. Affected by the styles of the Europe, a step forward was made in exposing the female figure. The Qipao in 1930s was shortened with the length to the knees, and the cuffs(袖口) were also narrowed.
And then ,with time going by,Qipao finally evolved into what it is today .
So why we so like Qipao?Where can we find the beauty in it?
Now the second part--beauty inside.
Qipao has its classic collar.The collar of the custom was usually made high and tight to fitting to keep warm.And now we have the round collar, the drop-shaped collar and so on.
Then let’s talk about the frog.You think it’s this lovely animal?NO!What I want to sa
y is that.The frog is an ornamental [ˌɔ:nəˈmentl] braiding for fastening the front of a garment that consists of a button and a loop through which it passes.
And moreover,Qipao has the unique JIN and OPENINGS and so on.All of that together make Qipao one of the most beautiful kind of dress in the world.It characterize Chinese women's modesty, softness and beauty. Like Chinese women's personality.And someone said that wearing it just as wearing the Museum paintings around, over the body dense then carried away.
Then, THE LAST PART--Significance in chinese culture.
What marks the expressiveness of Qipao are the Chinese elements and the wonderful beauty. We have many traditional treasures,like embroidery and tapestry,the classical fans and something else.We should make full use of them in order to put our Chinese culture into the world.
