摘要：PURPOSE:To correctly segment characters by calculating a character evaluating value by using a characteristic function using a character shape evaluating value and a character recognizing evaluation value as variables and then recognizing a character string image by using the character evaluation value. CONSTITUTION:A reference pattern extracting means 2 extracts a graphic feature from a character string image stored in a character string image storing part 1 to extract a basic pattern to be the minimum unit of the collection of graphic. A candidate character pattern forming means 3 integrates adjacent basic patterns to form a candidate character pattern and a character shape evaluation value calculating means 4 calculates a character shape evaluation value. A character recognition evaluation value calculating means 6 calculates a character recognition evaluation value while collating the evaluation value with the contents of a character dictionary storage means 5. A character evaluation value calculating means 8 uses a characteristic function using the character shape evaluation value and the character recognition evaluation value as variables to calculates character evaluation value. An optimum combination searching means 9 furthermore calculates a character string evaluation value, searches the combination of candidate character patterns so that
the calculated value is maximized and outputs the character string recognition result of the combinatio
n to the device.
