Nature is full of surprise. Nick Castro, a pest control expert in California sees many strange things in his work. But he was even stunned when he came across hidden treasure belonging to a pair of woodpeckers. Nick Castro was called to a house in Sonoma County when its owner noticed worms(虫) coming out of the wall. Much to his surprise, when he made a small cut in the wall, acorns started pouring out and they didn’t stop coming. “They just kept coming and coming, nonstop. I thought the acorns were only about a quarter of the way up the wall. But it turned out they reached high up to the top floor,” Castro said. The full amount of stored acorns ended up being 700 pounds in total, filling eight large bags which were so heavy that they were hard to pick up. It took three workers a full day to clean them.
Castro believed the acorns were kept by a pair of woodpeckers and it could have taken up to five years for the birds to do it. The birds dropped their treasures through a
hole in the chimney(烟囱) and entered through a separate hole to enjoy them. “The birds also kept acorns in other places of the house,” said Castro.
Woodpeckers live in the western and southwestern US. They usually keep acorns in holes they’ve made in dead trees. Castro wrote online, “I’ve never seen anything like this before. It’s a one in a hundred thousand chance to find something this interesting.”

Most people agree that the last couple of years have been stressful. Jessica Martin, who teaches art at West Side School in Healdsburg, California, thought her students just might have the magic words needed to bring calm to people in these difficult times. So, she, along with artist Asherah Weiss, worked with students at West Side on a project, PepToc.
The project had two parts—one was the hotline, and the other was creating encouraging posters. The two adults had the same basic question for all the students: “What could you say to help or encourage someone else?”
Students working on the hotline thought of what they would like to say. When they were ready, Ms. Martin recorded each one in English and Spanish. Later, she divided the recordings into the different parts of the telephone hotline. Pressing 1 brings up ideas for people who are “feeling mad, or nervous”. One of the helpful suggestions is “go get a cookie”. Pressing 2 results in “words of encouragement and life advice”. This includes messages like: “The world is a better place with you in it.” And “You are okay!” By pressing 3, you can hear a group of kids saying together: “You can do it! Keep trying,
don’t give up!” Pressing 4 brings you the sounds of children giggling and laughing—a sound certain to bring a smile to anyone’s face.
Other students took part in making encouraging posters, which were hung up around the town. Many posters had pieces of paper that people passing by could tear(撕)off and take with them.
Ms. Martin thought the project would only attract interest from people near the school. But the hotline
was soon getting hundreds of calls a day—and then, thousands of calls an hour. Now it has been popular with stressed adults, patients in hospitals, older people in homes, and others who just want to hear the happy voices of children.

24. It can be inferred(推断)from the last paragraph that the project ________ .
A.is a great success B.is a waste of time
C.needs more attention D.brings people good luck
“Where is Joe?” asked Mum. “In his room.” Daisy answered. She was trying to decide on the birthday gift for Mum. This year, she wanted something that couldn’t be bought at a store.
Then she heard Joe calling her. “Just a second,” she replied, walking toward her brother’s room. “Look!” Joe sounded close to tears. “No dragon.” Joe really wanted a toy dragon in the cereal(麦片) box, so he was a bit sad at finding nothing.
“Let’s see what the box says,” Daisy suggested. “I can’t read.” “You can’t because you don’t know how to read,” she said carefully. Last year, Mum made a decision to teach him to read, but the result was terrible. They both gave up. Daisy finished reading the box. “No promise of a toy dragon,” she said. “I wish you could read. So does Mum,” she added. The conversation swept away Daisy’s worry about a gift for Mum. “Maybe we can prepare it together.” she thought.
