Lesson 1    The Power Cut
The family was going on holiday. They were taking Biff and Chip.一家人要去度假。Biff and Chip正在收拾东西。
Mum and Dad were busy packing the car.
妈妈和爸爸正忙着装车。
“Will you pack these for us, please?” asked Wilma.
“请把这些给我们装上好吗？”Wilma问。
“There will be lots to do,” said Dad. “You won‟t need those.”  “会有许多事要做，”爸爸说。“你们不需要这些。”
“We will,” said Wilf. “We must take the game station.
“我们需要”，Wilf说，“我们必须带上游戏机。”
I‟ve got a great new game.”
“我们已经有了一个特别好的新游戏。”
“We want to watch these films,” said Wilma.
“我们想去看这些电影，”Wilma说。
“We haven‟t seen some of them yet.”
“我们还没有看过其中的一些（电影）。”
“And can we take the CD player?” asked Biff.
“而且我们能带上光碟机吗？”Biff问。
It was a long journey. It took hours. They stopped for a break.  这是一次长途旅行。花了好几个小时。他们中途停下来休息。
“Let‟s get a drink,” said Mum.
“我们去喝点东西吧，”妈妈说。
“Can we play a game in the arcade first?” asked Wilf.
“我们能再第一个游戏厅玩会游戏吗？”Wilf问。
At last they arrived at the cottage.
终于他们到达了乡间别墅。
“We‟re in the middle of a forest,” said Wilf.
“我们在森林里，”Wilf说。
“We‟re in the middle of nowhere,” said Wilma.
“我们前不着村后不着店，” Wilma说。
They went inside the cottage. Mum and Dad began to unpack the car. 他们走进别墅。妈妈和爸爸开始卸车。

There was a big television in the front room.
在前厅有个大电视。
“Great!” said Chip. “Let‟s watch TV.”
“太好了！”Chip说。“让我们看电视。”
“We could play some games,” said Wilf.
“我们玩点游戏，”Wilf说。
“Could you bring in our games station, Dad?”
“你能把游戏机拿进来吗，爸爸？”
“Not now,” said Dad. “Come and help us unpack the car.”
“现在不行，”爸爸说，“来帮我们卸车。”
At breakfast Wilma put on a film. Dad sighed. “Get dressed everyone.
吃早餐的时候，Wilma放了一部电影。爸爸叹了口气，“大家穿好衣服。”
We didn’t come on holiday to watch TV.”
我们来度假不是来看电影的。
“Can we watch this first?” asked Wilma.
“我们能第一个看这个吗？”Wilma问。
“Later,” said Dad. “Let‟s go out.”
“等会，”爸爸说，“让我们出去（玩）。”
“Wasn‟t it fun on the beach today?” said Mum.
“今天在海滩上不好玩吗？”妈妈说。
But nobody said anything. Wilf and Biff were busy playing a game.
但是没人吱声。Wilf and Biff 正忙着玩游戏。
Chip and Wilma were listening to a CD.
Chip and Wilma正在听光碟。
Suddenly all the lights went out.
突然，所有的灯灭了。
The television and the CD player went off.
电视和影碟机关了。
“What‟s happened?” called Biff.
“出什么事了？”Biff喊。
Dad came in with a torch. “There‟s been a power cut!” he said.
爸爸拿着手电筒进来。“停电了！”他说。
Mum found a lamp.
妈妈来一盏灯。
“What if the power doesn‟t come back on?” asked Chip, looking at the TV. “要是电不来怎么办？”Chip看着电视机问。
“We‟ll have to do without it,” said Dad.
“我们不得不将就了，”爸爸说。
“Oh, no!” said the children.
“哦，真倒霉！”孩子们说。
The power didn‟t come back on.
电不会马上来。
“It may be off for a long time,” said Dad.It was time to eat.
“这电也许要停很长时间，”爸爸说。该吃饭了。
They all sat round the table and had supper by candlelight.
他们都围着饭桌坐下来，并借着烛光吃晚饭。
It was fun eating in the dark. They took it in turns to tell stories.
在黑暗中吃晚餐很有趣。他们轮流讲故事。
Dad told them a funny story about a time when he was a little boy.
爸爸给他们讲了一件他小时候很好笑的事。
It made them all laugh.
（讲的事情）把大家都逗笑了。
That night the power didn‟t come back on.
那晚没来电。
The children had to use the lamp to go to bed.
孩子们不得不借着油灯的光上床睡觉。
Chip made a shadow on the wall with his hands.
Chip在墙上做手影
“Guess what it is,” he said.
“猜这是什么，”他说。
Wilma shone a torch under her chin. The light made her face look scary.  Wilma把手电筒放在下巴底下照。灯光使他的脸看上去很吓人。
“Whoooh!” she said. “I‟m a monster.”
“呜！”她说，“我是怪物。”
Everyone laughed. Then Mum came in and said it was time to go to sleep.  每个人都笑了。然后妈妈走进来说该睡觉了。
The next morning there was still no power.
第二天早上还是没有电。
So the family spent all day on the beach.
于是，一家人全天都在海滩上过的。
They played lots of games.  “It‟s late,” said Mum. “It‟s time to go.”
他们玩了好多游戏。“天晚了，”妈妈说，“该走了。”
“Can‟t we stay a bit longer?” asked Wilf.
“我们不能再呆一会儿吗？”Wilf问。
“I‟ve got an idea,” said Dad. ”Let‟s build a fire. We could cook supper.” “我有个主意”，爸爸说，“让我们生一堆火，我们做晚饭。”
“Brilliant!” they all shouted.
“太棒了！”他们都喊起来。
“Let‟s get some driftwood,” said Mum.
“让我们弄一些漂来的柴火，”妈妈说。
“I‟ll go and get food,” said Dad.
“我去拿吃的，”爸爸说。
It was getting dark by the time the fire was finished.
篝火堆好了，天黑了下来。
“Hey Wilf! That looks like a giant bird‟s nest,” said Mum.
“嘿，Wilf！像巨大的鸟巢，”妈妈说。
“You light it, not lay an egg in it!”
“你把它点着，不想在里面下蛋。！”
Dad cooked lots of food on the fire.
爸爸在火上煮了许多食物。
Then Mum toasted some marshmallows.
然后妈妈烤了一些棉花糖。
They all sat and looked at the stars.
他们都坐下看星星。
“I have a surprise,”said Dad. “Sparklers!”
“我有个惊喜，”爸爸说，“烟花棒！”
“Sorry,”said Dad the next morning.“Still no power.” “对不起，”爸爸说第二天早上“一直没电。”
“We can do without it,” smiled Chip.
“们什么都不能做，” Chip笑着说。
“Last night was magic,” said Wilf.
“晚太妙了,”, Wilf说。
“What shall we do tonight?” asked Biff.
“今晚我们要做什么？”Biff问。
That night Wilma had a good idea.
那晚Wilma有个好主意。
“We could play hide and seek,” she said.
“我们玩捉迷藏，”她说。
“If you are  ‘It’ you have a torch.”
“如果你是“它”你有只手电筒。”
Everyone hid around the dark cottage. Wilf was “It”.  每个人在黑暗别墅的四处藏了起来。Wilf 是“它”。
He counted to a hundred.
它数到一百。
Wilf looked in every room.
