Replacing a DIMM (Memory Module)
Before you begin the replacement procedure
Before starting the replacement procedure, ensure that you:
•Review any relevant VPLEX best practices, white papers, and knowledge base articles on EMC Support Online.
•Read and understand the reference material about personal and equipment safety at the end of this document.
•Read through this field-replaceable unit procedure.
•Note all warnings and cautions within the procedure.
During the procedure, you type some commands in a shell session and some commands in a VPlexcli session. To help identify the applicable session, many tasks include one or more of the following icons:
Command prompt:
Cluster-nonspecific Linux shell prompt:
Cluster-nonspecific VPlexcli prompt:
The icons representing the cluster-nonspecific Linux shell prompt and VPlexcli prompt indicate that you perform the associated step on either cluster.
Precautions when replacing a Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM)
A Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) or a DIMM socket can be damaged easily when removing or inserting it in the director tray. To prevent damage when replacing a memory module, note the following precautions:
•Handle only the outside edges of a DIMM using EMC ESD-safe handling precautions.
•When removing a DIMM, push down on both latches simultaneously to eject the memory module.•When inserting a DIMM, gently push down on both ends of the memory module simultaneously. The latches close automatically when the DIMM is fully seated.
WARNING:Improper air baffle replacement can damage the DIMM sockets. Verify that all DIMM socket latches are engaged and/or in the UP position before replacing the air baffle. See the air baffle label diagram to find latch locations that can collide with the baffle.

VS6 Engine Overview
An overview of the main components in the front and rear of a VS6 engine.
The VS6 engine
The VS6 engine is a 4U chassis that includes the components listed. Engine components on Side B are reversed and inverted with respect to components on Side A.
Engine front view
The following components are on the front of the engine:
•Two directors - one on Side A and the other on Side B
•Four battery backup units, two per director
•Six fans per director
•SAS drive bay (fillers only)

Engine rear view
The following components are on the rear of the engine:
•Two management modules, one per side
•Engine-1 has two Management Module Control Station (MMCS) modules
•Four power supply units, two per director
•Eight fan filler modules, four per base module and four chassis mounted
•Five I/O module slots per director
•Two de-populated base modules

Task 1:Performing preliminary steps
About this task
Note:Perform this procedure only after a VPLEX cluster has been configured for operation (by running the EZ-Setup utility). Do not run the procedure on a new cluster that has not yet been configured.
CAUTION:Verify that the cluster is configured for high availability. If it is not configured for high availability, it can cause data unavailability when a component is removed.
