The Goal of College Education
College education is playing an increasingly significant role in the life of every student and in the advancement of society. Since we were little children, we have been dreaming about attending college where we can materialize our ambitions. However, as time elapses, people’s views toward college education have greatly changed. Some people consider college education as a means to secure decent jobs, but others view it as an approach to developing both individuals and society. As far as I am concerned, college education should be an all-round reward.
Some people hold that to alleviate the heavy employment pressure faced by graduates, college education must shoulder the responsibility to render good jobs for them. Confronted with the keen competition in the labor market, college
students are under much more employment pressure than ever before. In the past, it was not difficult for college graduates to find a good job at all, for college education hadn’t been made universal . As a result, they had an obvious advantage over their counterparts. However, nowadays, an overwhelming majority of high school students have been admitted to college. Consequently, college students are losing their glamour in the crowded labor market. Therefore, they deem that college education should ensure graduates find desirable jobs.
But in other people’s opinions, colleges should not only be cultivators of all-round students but also motivators of advanced society. Students are expected to mature their thoughts, acquire various knowledge, associate with all talents and improve their skills in other aspects at college. In this way, these well-rounded students will contribute to the development
of society by applying what they have learned to social practice. As is known to all, college education has produced numerous scientists, men of letters and scholars such as Wang Xuan, Deng Jiaxian and Ji Xianlin, all of whom have made great contributions to the advancement of society.
Personally, I maintain that college education should incorporate all those above-mentioned goals and ultimately it will prove a all-round reward for both students and the society. Rather than focusing too much on students’theoretical knowledge, universities should reform their curriculum and offer more lessons to develop students’professional skills , which will help them better adapt themselves to the demands of modern society. Equipped with practical skills, graduates will find it easier to find jobs. Meanwhile society will benefit in this way. Therefore, there is no conflict between securing good jobs and developing
glamourindividuals and society. Instead , college education can achieve a win-win result.
