Ten years ago,Liz Plachta gave birth to a little girl with Down syndrome（唐氏综合征）named Ruby.The love Plachta felt for her daughter inspired her to create a scholarship of ＄2，000 to help another child with Down syndrome go to college.
"I really just wanted the world to see what I saw in her,which was that she was amazing and capable（有能力的），" Plachta shared with CBS News.
The project of sending one child to college didn't quite go as planned.The family actually managed to raise money for 11 kids with Down syndrome in that year.From there,Ruby's Rainbow was born--a non-profit aimed at securing higher education for those with Down syndrome and giving them the chance not only to learn,but also to become independent and able to contribute to society.
Ten years later,this scholarship program has snowballed into something much bigger. "Through the charity,＄1.2 million has been raised,allowing many people with Down syndrome to achieve their dreams of a higher education,and showing the world just how capable they are.
However,although the scholarship program is a wonderful educational opportunity,what's really surprising is the positive message it sends to parents of children will Down syndrome.

Giant whales and clumsy elephant seals may give the impression that the ocean's mammals（哺乳动物）can grow to any size,but new research suggests this is not the case.Water-based mammals are generally larger than the ones on land because their size helps them stay warm in cold water.When sea creatures are big,they lose less heat into the surrounding water,but there is a limit to how big they can grow because they need enough food to keep their blubber（脂肪）.
The new study is totally different from previous theories suggesting that pressure on the body size should be more relaxed in water,perhaps because of the large environment and ability for animals to float rather than have to support their body weight on legs.
Researchers have found that whales and dolphins evolved（进化）from four-legged mammals,like the hippo,which once lived on land.Meanwhile,seals and sea lions are clos
ely related to dogs.It seems that these ancestors grew rapidly in size when they returned to the oceans,but the new study has found there are limits to the process.
When marine（海洋的）mammals are very small,they lose heat back into the water so fast that there's no way to eat enough food to keep up.So,in order to stay warm,they need to be large.However,they can't supersize themselves.This is because it is challenging to eat enough food to keep a giant body.
"Many people have viewed going into the water as a way to free themselves for mammals,but what we're seeing is that it's actually the opposite.It's not that water allows you to be a big mammal,but it's that have to be a big mammal in water - you don't have other chances," a researcher says.
