Peer pressure is very influential in numerous young people’s lives. From my prospective, the advantages of this phenomenon are outweighed by its disadvantages.
Some teenagers under peer pressure are afraid of being excluded from soc ial groups and tend to gain peer conformity on taste, clothing, value and so on. These youth are likely to spend enormous time on social life rather than studying, which may pose a threat to their academic performances. In contrast, those who are less socially accepted can concentrate on their school work and acquire higher grades.
peerAnother issue is that young people under peer pressure may have behavioural problems. In order to gain acceptance of friends, teenagers are likely to take some detrimental or risk behaviours, such as physical violence, drug abuse, sexual behaviour and reckless driving, because these activities commonly occur in the company of friends. This is particularly the case for those who lack of self-control and self-discipline. Such problems can present obstacles on their personal development.
However, there is still beneficial effect when youth are pressured by their peers towards positive behaviours. For instance, young students may be motivated to volunteer for charities or excel in academic. These activities make it advantageous for them to obtain well-rounded development. And yo
uth are more likely to hit their targets and lead a fulfilling life when they are in positive social groups.
To summarise, although positive peer pressure can enable the young to improve themselves, it brings some problems such as teenagers’harmful behaviours and excessive pursuit of acceptance.
