English Grammar Basics
1.Comparison with "as。as。"
1) "as + adjective or adverb in the base form + as + compared object" structure。Example: He studies as hard as you。He studies as hard as you do.
2) In negative or interrogative sentences。"not so…as…" can be used。Example: He can not run as fast as you。He can't run as fast as you can.
2.n with "only"
When "only" is followed by an adverbial or adverbial clause at the beginning of a sentence。the sentence is inverted。Example: Only by diligence and honesty can one succeed in life。One can only succeed in life through diligence and honesty.
Note: When "only" modifies the subject。there is no n。Example: Only that girl knew how t
o work out the problem。That girl was the only one who knew how to solve the problem.
3.Subjunctive mood with "wish"
When the clause after "wish" expresses a n contrary to fact or an unlikely future event。the verb in the clause is in the subjunctive mood:
1) To express a present contrary-to-fact n。use the past tense or past progressive tense for the verb in the clause。and use "were" for the past tense of "be." Example: I wish I knew the answer to the n。(But I don't.)
2) To express a past contrary-to-fact n。use "had + past participle" for the verb in the clause。Example: I wish (that) I hadn't wasted so much time。(But I did.)
3) To express a subjective wish for the future。use "would/should/could/might + base form of the verb" for the predicate verb。The subject of the main clause and the subject of the subordinate clause cannot be the same。because whether the n expected by the main clause subject can be realized depends on the attitude or willingness of the subordinate cla
use subject (except for gerunds and infinitives)。Example: I wish it would。raining。(I hope it s raining.)
Note: If "would" is used in the object clause after "wish," it can express a request。usually implying the speaker's displeasure or n。Example: I wish you would be quiet.
4."it" as a formal object
Just like "it" can be used as a formal subject。we often use "it" as a formal object and place the real object clause at the end of the sentence。This is particularly common in sentences with a complex object.
