摘  要
英语习语是经过长时间的使用而提炼出来的固定短语或短句。它既是英语语言长期发展的历史产物，也是一个民族文化发展留下来的精华。英语习语除了具有浓郁的民族性，还带有鲜明的
修辞性，其翻译历来是学术界的难点之一。本文将按照以下步骤论述英语习语的翻译：首先从分析英语习语的特点入手，阐明如何从习语的民族性和比喻性中把握习语的内在涵义；然后分析和研究当代英语习语翻译中容易出现的问题，再从其翻译技巧着手，论述如何把英语习语的内容用汉语准确地表达出来。本论文将有助于加深对英语习语包含的民族文化特和比喻性的理解，唤起对英语习语错译问题的重视，针对病因，对症下药，使英语习语汉译更加准确。

An idiom is a fixed phrase or short sentence carried out by all human beings in long-term usage and refinement. Idioms are a historical product of the long-term development of language, which is the essence of a national culture. Although the research into idioms is very popular, it is always a difficult point in the translation of English idioms. Therefore, this thesis is to explore some techniques to translate English idioms. First, this thesis will analyze the English idioms to illustrate the point that English idioms are enriched with cultur
e. The second chapter is to summarize the problems in the current translation of English idiom. The third chapter put forward some principles and skills to translate English idioms based on the features mentioned above. This thesis is expected to deepen national culture and metaphorical understanding in English idioms, call for readers paying more attention to English idioms mistranslation, and take appropriate measures to solve problems.

1. Introduction
  1.1 Purpose and Significance of the Research
Idioms are formed during the use of the unique and fixed expressions of language. Idioms usually include maxims, proverbs, slang, jargon, and allusions. Idioms are the essence of language which are used most commonly in English speaking-countries and strongest in expression. They carry a nation’s cultural characteristics and cultural connotation. English i
dioms are a mirror of a nation: it reflects a nation’s life attitude and way of thinking. English idioms, being a kind of language, have strong expressive force and a clear meaning in sentence to make language more colorful. The process of translation of idioms is to use another language to reproduce the original meaning creatively on the basis of a correct understanding of the original sentence. There are differences between English and Chinese in the living environment, historical and cultural background and religion. The main features of English idioms lie in its nationality and figurativeness. So, this thesis will firstly describe the features of English idioms; then propose problems and put forward some principles of translating English idioms; and finally propose English translation strategies to solve the problems. It is easy to guide the English learners to do translation of idioms through the application of appropriate translation skills and methods. In addition, based on a full understanding of exotic features of English idioms, learners can keep the originality of the original sentence in the process of the translation .Then the readers can enjoy exquisite structure and subtle humor of the English idioms.
