Forrest Gump’s Experiences and his Behaviors
Forrest Gump’s Childhood
Forrest was born on June 6, 1944, near the fictional small town of Greenbow, Alabama. He and his mother lived in a large house just outside the town. They made money by renting rooms to travelers. His mother always told him that his father was on vacation as the father was absent during his life. Forrest was forced to wear leg braces which made it very difficult to walk or run. He also had a relatively low IQ of 75 which kept him from going to public school. Despite his physical and mental challenges, Forrest's mother encouraged him and told him "stupid is as stupid does".
One day, Forrest met Jenny Curran and was immediately attracted by her when he was on the school bus. They two became close friends, often playing around a large tree after scho
ol. Jenny, one of the few people besides his mother who would like to accept Forrest as he was, often helped him and told him to run fast when a group of bullies were throwing stones at him and chasing him on their bikes. Until one day, Forrest was able to run incredibly fast. He would never wear leg braces again and was able to run everywhere he wanted to after that.
Forrest Gump Became a Successful Man
Despite of low intelligence Forrest earned a scholarship and he was named to the All-American football team. After graduating, Forrest enlisted in the army and was sent to Vietnam, where he became friends
with Bubba, a man whose dream was to buy a shrimping boat. When his army was ambushed, Forrest's "running" saved lots of his comrades as he could repeatedly into the firefight and carried them to safety. His friend Bubba died, while the commanding officer lost both legs. Forrest himself was injured and awarded the Medal of Honor by the president. Later, Forrest discovered an aptitude for ping pong, while recovering from his inj
uries. Using money from his ping-pong career, Forrest bought a shrimping boat, fulfilling his wartime promise to Bubba. The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company became a huge success. Later, he went for a long run for nearly three years, gathering a group of followers.
To Analyze the Spirits and the Importance for us to Learn
Forrest Gump’s Spirits
In the film, Forrest Gump is shaped as the embodiment of virtue, honesty, keeping faith, braveness, persistence, tenacity and positive attitudes. He always gave people what they needed and never minded if other people would refuse. He was open-minded and straightforward towards his life. He just used his own wisdom, faith and courage to overcome difficulties that appeared in front of him, only knowing by instinct that he should keep running in the road. He ran past the discrimination of other children, ran past the football field in the
university, ran past the debacle of the Vietnam war, ran past the ping-pong diplomatic battlefield, and ran all over the United States. And eventually he got to his destination.
Forrest Gump's success, in a sense, should be ascribed to his low IQ and his indifference to gains or loss. The only thing he had done was to simply insist on what he thought was right and to carry it out. Forrest Gump is not really stupid. Only those who bullied him were real fool. He never counted the cost of the effort, which contributed to his success to a large extent.
The Importance for us to Learndefending
We often judge a man by his IQ, but we also should know that a wise man also has his weakness. Those who are not clever enough can also have some advantages, such as Forrest Gump who had a low IQ, but he could run quickly, play rugby well, play table tennis and catch shrimps. Obviously, as college students we should know that everything is possible. As long as you are willing to take time to learn, you will succeed in a certain area.
“Life is like a box of chocolates. You nev er know what you are gonna take.”That is true. Life is full of various kinds of choices and challenges, and we can learn lots of valuable experience when we are in difficult time. We may be cleverer than Forrest Gump, but we ar
e not
able to concentrate on one thing, which often causes failure although we may have done many things. Forrest Gump knew his own shortcomings, so he was more absorbed in what he was doing than others. As a result, he succeeded in many areas. Forrest Gump could insist on his running every day, could concentrate on playing table tennis, and immersed in the deep love with Jenny Curran. If we college students could make ourselves as persistent and dedicated as Forrest, we can also carry out what we have promised.
