Dear Theo,
Thank you very much for your letter. I’ve had lots of replies to my advertisement and it’s been difficult to know how to reply to them all. Many were very interesting, though some were really strange! Yours was one of the best, so I’ve decided to ask you to write to me again if you are still interested after I tell you something about myself.
Like you I am in Year 10 and will take my School Certificate (证书) next year. But unlike you I am quite good at maths and all science subjects and poor at all sports.
I don’t like acting, but I like music very much and I play the piano well. I’m also interested in astronomy (天⽂学) and our hobby group are building a telescope (望远镜). It’s all very exciting.
I live with my mum and dad. Mum is Irish but Dad was born in England and has only been out of it for short holidays. I have an older brother at university. He’s studying medicine and wants to be a doctor. If all goes well, I shall take a science degree (学位) at London University. As you have already guessed, I’m sure I want to be an astronomer. Perhaps even an astronaut one day.
I hope you’ll write again. Australia has one of the world’s greatest telescopes!
Sincerely,
Jane Wilson

No two people are just the same. Friends 3 don’t get on well. That doesn’t mean that they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will make up and become friends again.
Sometimes friends move away. Then we feel very 4 . We miss them very much, but we can call them and write to them. And we can make new friends. It is surprising (惊讶) to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them.
There’s more good news for people who have friends. They live longer than people who don’t. Why? It could be that they are happier. Being happy helps you stay well or it could be just knowing that someone cares. If someone cares about you, you take 5 care of yourself.

IV. Read the passage and answer the following questions:
How do people greet one another in countries around the world? A kiss, a hug, a handshake, or a bow? It depends on the country and culture.
In the USA, as in most places around the globe, the handshake is a common greeting to show friendliness, hospitality and trust.
In many places in Europe, people like to kiss upon greeting, and most of them have very strict rules about how many times to kiss someone’s cheeks and on which cheek to start. Parisians(巴黎⼈) kiss four times from cheek to cheek, always with the left cheek first. If you are in Brittany, kiss three times; and in other parts of France, keep it to two. Two kisses is also the rules in Spain, Austria, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. In the Netherlands, people usually kiss three times; more kiss
es are for the elderly and close family members. Age is also a factor for the Belgians, who kiss once for people of their own age and three times for people ten years older.
Of course, handshakes and kissing aren’t the only ways to say “Hi” around the worl d. For example, bowing is a common form of greeting in Japan. But there’s just no way to remember all the different greetings around the world. So when in doubt, remember that a firm but gentle handshake, a smile, and an open mind won’t be wrong.
