Day Three
Our melting planet
The Okjokull glacier (奥克冰川) is dying.
It is Iceland’s first glacier to die because of global warming (全球变暖). About 100 years ago, the Okjokull glacier had an area of 15 square kilometers and was 50 meters thick. It w
as as big as 2,100 soccer fields (足球场). 3 But now it is only one square kilometer and is just 15 meters thick. It is not a real glacier anymore.
Its ice has turned into water because of global warming. Temperatures (温度) have gone up because of greenhouse gas emissions (温室气体排放). A study came out in April. It said glaciers across nearly half of the world will be gone by 2100 if emissions don’t go down. People put up a plaque (碑) at Okjokull to remind others of the dangers of global warming.
