Until a short time ago, the Italians mostly ate Italian food. But in the past ten years more and more immigrants(移民)have been coming into the country with their food. Now Italians are fighting back.
The Tuscan town of Lucca doesn’t want any kebab(烤肉串)shops and Chinese restaurants any more. Lucca, about 77. 67km from Florence, has said officially that it decides to protect its own food tradition(传统). So, no more foreign food shops are allowed in this historic city.
A debate is going on between town leaders and the population. Is it possible to ban(禁止)other cultures in the time of globalization(全球化)?Italy’s agriculture minister says that it is important to protect Italian culture and tradition. He has told his citizens that they should not eat pineapples, but instead turn to panetone, a type of traditional cake.
Others are feeling ashamed at what has happened. Critics(评论家)of the ban on foreign food say that a lot of Italian food doesn’t come from Italy but from other regions. For example, tomatoes came from South America and pasta from China. They think foreign food can enrich Italian food culture instead of leading it to come to an end.
The decision is also influenced by the politicians of the region. In northern Italy the right wing(右翼)Northern League is very strong. It is against foreigners and foreign cultures in Italy.
Some Italians are also afraid that food from other countries is being sold as Italian food. Cheap restaurants buy low-quality olive oil from Greece or Turkey. Truffles(松露)that are bought from other countries are often passed on as Italian truffles from the northern part of the country.
