“Mummy, I got something for you!” Cody ran through the door after school. His face wore the biggest smile ever. He waved something above his head. “It's a pen. But not just any pen.
It's a lucky pen!” He handed me the pen __1__, waiting for my reaction(反应).crayon怎么读英语
I looked at the pen in my hand. There was nothing __2__ about it. It looked just like any other ballpoint pen. I had a drawer full of them. At that moment, I didn't realize how special it was or how much I would treasure(珍爱) it.
I had made the decision to be a(n) __3__. I had dreamed about it for a long time but I was afraid of being refused by the publishing houses. The night before, I told my husband my __4__ when I thought Cody wasn't listening. “What if __5__ likes my writing and I fail?” But Cody did __6__ what I said. Now he stood in front of me, watching me examine the pen. “You don't have to be afraid now,” he said. “This pen will make your __7__ great and everyone will love you.”
Tears filled my eyes. Refusal(拒绝) and failure didn't seem like such a big problem any more. Even if I __8__ sold a book, I had everything I could ever need. I knew that pen would bring me luck. And I felt __9__ already, just by having Cody in my life, especially when I heard what he did to get it.
In the lunchroom, Cody heard an older boy talking about having a lucky __10__. He decided to get it for me. The boy was a tough negotiator(强硬的谈判者) but Cody didn't __11__. In the end, he __12__ his favourite Matchbox car, two army men his brother gave him, a crayon, and a piece of candy—his most important things, for that pen. Just to make __13__ feel better.
I still have that pen, though it's long out of ink, in a cup on my desk. When a refusal letter arrives and I start feeling __14__, I look at it and remember just how lucky I am. For while I value that pen, it's Cody who I really __15__ in my life.

成功的关键 | 议论文 | 270 | ★★★ | 8分钟 | ____分钟 | ____/5 |
Why are some people more successful than others? Why do some people make more money, live happier lives and achieve much more in the same number of years than most people?
Over the years, I have read thousands of books and articles on the subjects of success and achievement. It seems that the reasons for those achievements have been discussed for more than two thousand years, in every way. But one thing that most experts agree on is self-discipline(自律).
Some years ago, I attended a meeting in New York. I happened to meet a gentleman. His name was Kopmeyer. He was famous in the field of success and achievement. He had written four books, and each of them had 250 success principles(原则). He had developed these during more than 50 years of research and study. I had read all of his books more than once.
Luckily, I had a chance to talk with him. I asked him a question that many people would ask, “Of all the one thousand success principles you have discovered, which is the most im
portant?”
He smiled at me as if he had been asked this question many times, and replied without thinking twice, “There are 999 different success principles, but without self-discipline, none of them work.” He went on saying, “Many years ago, Thomas Huxley said the most important success principle is,‘Do__what__you__should__do__when__you__should__do__it,__whether__you__feel__like__it__or__not.__’”
Self-discipline is magic because it opens all doors for you, and makes everything else possible.
