三国中的书信（中英对照）
 刘表写给袁氏兄弟的：
 (一）A man of honor will not turn to hostile lands to escape civil broils. Some time ago I was advised that you have bent the knee to Cao Cao,thus setting at naught your late father's unpaid blood debt and abandoning your fraternal responsibilities. Your actions have dishonored the alliance that once bound your father and me. Even if your little brother(Yuan Shang) failed you, your should have yielded to his demands all the same, waiting for the turmoil to subdue before sorting out the rights and wrongs. Would that have been a nobler course?
(一）有德之人安得栖身异地而避内祸？今日吾听闻汝屈膝曹操而不顾尔亡父之血仇，加之摒弃手足之义。尔之作为实辱吾与汝父之联盟。纵使尔弟（袁尚）负汝，汝也应先予其所求，静待内争平息，而后在做计较，不失为一良策。
（二）Yuan Tan is hasty-tempered by nature, who has become confused about rights and wrongs. But the first thing you need to do is to get rid of Cao Cao and avenge your late father, after that you can sort out your conflicting claims. Is this not the wiser course? Unless you relent, you and your elder brother will end up like the hunting dog and rabbit! Both ran themselves to death, and a passing farmer picked them up.
（一）袁谭本性急躁，不辨是非。然汝先应除曹报父仇，而后再解除尔等之纷争，何不失为一良策乎？若汝急进求成，尔等兄弟终沦为猎犬野兔，驱于灭顶，而一农夫路之拾耳。
郭嘉写给曹操的：
I have learned that Yuan brothers are seeking refuge in Liaodong. Your lordship should not use any arm against it under any circumstances. The governor has feared that Yuan Shao would annex his territories and naturally suspected his sons as well. If you attack them, they would be united and counter you. Maybe you will not win over them for a short period of time. Give them no cause for alarm. They will intrigue with each other in favor of you!
 吾闻袁氏兄弟避难于辽东。主公不宜切不可动用武力。辽东刺史早恐袁绍意欲吞并其地，自是疑其子。若主公攻伐，其必然联以抗之。若如此，主公亦不能速胜之。若主公让其放松防备，其必自乱，实益耳！
徐母写给徐庶的：
The recent death of your younger brother has left me with no other kins except you. In the midst of sorrow and isolation, I never dreamed that Your Excellency Cao would lure me to the capital and detain me in chains. If not by Chen Yu, I would have been tortured to the death. I would be spared only by your earlier presence. When you read this, do not forget the hardship your mother raised you. Come with all speed to fulfill your duty as a filial son. Then we will bide the time until we could go home and tend our garden. Only in this way, can we avoid calamity. My life hangs by a thread. You are my sole hope of salvation. Could I implore further?
sorting out
近来汝之幼弟亡故，使吾之亲实维汝矣。沉于悲痛孤苦之中，吾万不料曹操诱吾至许都进而禁锢之。若非程昱相助，吾早已凌虐至死。望汝速来，吾方能免死。阅此信时，切不可望母
养育儿之辛劳。速来尽尔之孝道。届时时机成熟，吾母子二人便可归家种田，非如此吾二人不能幸免。吾命悬一线，唯汝可救。还需央求乎？
曹操写给孙权的：
Under recent imperial mandate, I have authority to act against the state criminals. Our banners tilted southland, Liu Song bound his hands in submission. The populace of Jingzhou, sensing the direction of events, has transferred their allegiance to us. Now we have one million hardy warriors and one thousand able generals. I propose you will join us in a hunting expedition to Jiangxia in order to strike a decisive blow against Liu Bei. Then we can share the territory between us and seal the everlasting amity. Do not hesitate but favor me with a speedy reply.
 吾受命于天，征伐国贼。挥军向南，刘琮束手而降。荆州之民，知时事，现已效忠。吾有精兵百万，良将千员。吾望汝会猎江夏，一战剪除刘备。届时吾等便共享其地，永结同心，万载不移。望汝及早予以回复，切莫迟疑。
