Learning to Control Your Feelings
Feelings are like a rollercoaster - some days they're way up high, and other days they plunge way down low. One minute you're laughing and having a blast, and the next minute you're feeling sad, angry or frustrated over something that happened. It can be really hard to control how you're feeling, especially when you're a kid and all those emotions seem so big and overwhelming.
But I've learned that it's really important to try to get a grip on your feelings before they get out of control. When you let yourself get too angry, you might end up saying or doing mean things that you regret later. Or if you get overly excited about something, you could act impulsive and make poor choices. And bottling up sadness for too long can lead to anxiety or
depression. So figuring out how to manage your emotions is a key life skill.
My mom is always telling me to "use my words" instead of yelling, hitting or giving anyone the silent treatment when I'm upset. She says communicating how I feel in a calm, respectful way is much better than lashing out. It takes practice, but I'm getting better at it. Like if I'm mad at my little brother for messing with my stuff, instead of pushing him I try to say "I feel angry when you touch my things without asking. Please don't do that." Speaking up right away keeps frustration from building up too much.
Taking deep breaths is another thing that really helps me chill out when my emotions are going crazy. My teacher taught us a technique where you breathe in through your nose while counting to 5, then breathe out through your mouth while counting to 8. Doing that for a few minutes can relax your mind and body so you don't feel so worked up and frazzled. Going for a walk or playing outside also allows me to blow off steam in a positive way.
Sometimes, though, feelings like jealousy, embarrassment or fear are more complicated to deal with. That's when it's really important to have people you can talk to openly, like you
r parents, teachers or good friends. Just describing what's going on and why you're feeling a certain way can make those emotions seem less scary and more manageable. The caring adults in my life remind me that everybody struggles with hard feelings sometimes, and that it's okay to ask for help working through them.
Another good practice is keeping a journal about your feelings. Writing things down can help you make sense of confusing emotions and figure out what's really bugging you. Maybe you're feeling left out because your best friend made a new friend they're hanging out with a lot. Getting your hurt, jealous feelings out on paper takes some of the sting out, plus it creates a record you can look back on to see how you've grown and changed over time.
The bottom line is, we all have lots of different feelings all the time, and that's completely normal. The key is learning how to embrace the good ones and process the difficult ones in a healthy, productive way instead of losing control. With mindfulness, communication, and support from others, kids can develop the emotional skills they need to navigate life's ups and downs. It's one of the most important things we can learn!

Feelings are hard when you're a kid! Our emotions can get so intense so quickly.
